I'm a millennial jobless shitbag, and believe me when I say, I would love to walk in to businesses and personally hand in my application and resume. They just don't do that anymore, though. Most places I go to absolutely require you to apply online. It sucks just being a number, man.

I too was a millennial jobless shitbag. I hated that the all the advice on getting a job from my parents and people older than me was worthless and not applicable anymore. Then one day I walked into an Air Force recruiting office and signed the dotted line. 2 years later now I have a job as a Dental Assistant in the Air Force with a shitload of benefits, clear career path, and steady income. I'm not saying it's for everyone but I definitely feel like I took a huge shortcut in life and there are opportunities available if you keep looking for them. Keep your head up!

Speaking as someone who's in that "20-something male not working a full time job" part of society, me playing video games or whatever instead of working is not the cause of me not having a full-time job, it's the effect. I've been working part time jobs since I finished high school six years ago, because those are the only employers that give me the light of day.

It's difficult to get a full-time job when the market seems to be full of employers searching for workers in their 20's with experience comparable to people in their 50's.

What a middle-class white-centered view of the world. I'm really surprised they went through this discussion assuming lack of employment was a choice. Mind blowing, I feel like there are either details they missed in the article or they seriously misinterpreted it.

Everyone gives them shit about audio but to be honest I don't mind it and I'm the kind of guy who gets pissed when a video is 720p and not 1080p or when the audio lags but that is for movies and shows if you don't understand how a live production works then please don't bitch about it. I know they hate it but it just makes everything seem more real. I feel bad for the people who honestly can't stand it, they know when there is an error and they fix is as fast as possible. If you honestly think your comment is going to change what they are already try and have fixed by the time you comment then your just a lock jawed dip shit.

I mean, America is rated as having one of the worst education systems in the developed world. But as bad as it is for most people, I can tell you it's worse if you have a learning disability like any form of autism, it's about 50 times worse.

I'd like to point out to whoever wrote this article that correlation doesn't necessarily imply causation.  Just because unemployment is rising at the same time as video game time, doesn't necessarily mean that they are related at all.  There are a lot of assumptions being thrown around in this article that don't really mean much if you examine them thoroughly.

    • BABBS FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It could even be a reverse effect, where unemployment frees up time for all hobbies, vidja included.  It's just not enough information to determine causality.

It couldn't possibly be that more young men are staying home because the only jobs they can consistently attain have had stagnant wages for a decade+, and of little to no advancement, in addition to said cheap entertainment.  But yeah, it's all laziness.

This is just the same old story, just a different time. As it was pointed out during the podcast, every generation is looked down by the preceding one as the "worst generation." I actually did a paper on this last semester. There was a time when the baby boomers were viewed as the troublemakers. There was a time when Generation X was viewed as lazy and unmotivated. There was a time when emergence of the video camera was viewed as threatening to society because young people were spending too much time video taping themselves! The original selfie.

Go back several more decades and there was a time when acts such as riding BICYCLES during their rise in popularity were viewed as acts of aggression and rebellion.

These things happen all the time. Old people will always blame the young ones for everything and yell at them for not having the same views on life they had when they were young. Hell, I'm barely 28 and I hate the Tumblr crowd even though only a few years separate us.

While not the be-all and end-all, this presentation by Adam Conover is a good counter to the whole "millennials are the worst generation" argument:

What happened to the sound quality this week? It's usually better than this. Like, it sounds kind of echo-y and you can hear an ambient hum the entire time? It's not that bad or that distracting, I was just wondering.

Talking about trying out stuff careerwise; I'm 24 years old and I recently got my first ever job, in the middle of my plans of getting a masters degree in math as well. I now work full time, at least until christmas, as a math/science teacher in 7th grade at a private school.

Going in to the job I had no idea what I wanted to do in life after I'm done with uni, and I still don't.. But at least I've learned that I don't want to become a teacher for real, and that has to account for something, right?. (Don't get me wrong, I love the kids, and trying to communicate and teach something you are passionate about is amazing fun. But there's a lot of stuff outside the teaching part of the job that takes its toll.)

I accepted the job mainly because I needed to get a feel of what a job requires of me, both mentally and physically, but also because I felt that school was starting to get real monotonous (wake up, go to class, get home, study, sleep), and needed a change of scenery. Getting a chance to experience all this is to me invaluable (even though getting a comparably fat pay check at the end of every month is really nice).

To relate this to what you guys on the podcast talked about, I don't think I ever would have gotten the job if I hadn't gone to uni and gotten my bs in math. Without it I don't think I would've even been considered for the job, so my hard work and effort actually paid off. And all this time I've been doing something that I'm really passionate about (math). So I'm just in a really happy place right now.

You guys were actually spot-on, I mean, I actually recognize myself and some of my friends in what you said. Choosing games and cheap entertainment above going out there to work and/or study, and surely giving patreon or youtube a try to make money. You hit the nail on the head.

However I have applied multiple times and have tried to start a study (that i will surely start next semester) but I still recognized myself in it.

I agree with you guys on trades need to be giving more attention in the school systems. Lots of schools have voc schools, but they are often looked down on by the home school's guidance counselors despite the fact that they can get certified in a trade and make as much if not more as someone who went to college without the crippling debt and there are always jobs for welders, electricians, plumbers, and a million other similar things.

So I'm not 100% sure this is relevant but this podcast made me think of it. I have my B.S. in Criminal Justice, even when I graduated I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do. Eventually after applying to over 70 jobs and no responses, I finally got a job as a private investigator. Needless to say after how rough that job turned out to be I quit. That job and how shitty it was actually made me get up the confidence and gave me a reason to pursue my Master's while working a part time job in retail that I didn't expect to be anything more than just that, but I've made friends and worked my way up and got promoted. I don't know where this is going but the best advice I can give to someone is to just think about all these part time jobs or non-dream jobs as character building experiences, just like they all said.

And this is just an observation but everyone that I talked to at RTX this year (and I'm not saying everyone there, just who I spoke with) was into streaming, voice acting, making YouTube videos or doing something in the media field. This just surprised me cause I watch all this content and play video games to get away from the real world. Personally, I can't imagine playing video games for a job because to me (and I'm not trying to put anyone down or anything by any means) I feel like I wouldn't enjoy the moments I do get to play games. Mostly a side note here but it just popped into my head too.

I'm so grateful that you guys made this podcast, it was exactly what I needed to hear right now. I'm 19 years old and I've been unemployed for about a month, I worked at a gas station for 9 months prior to that (it was my first job), and I worked my ass off for the entirety of that time, and trying to do my best. But I eventually had a falling out with my assistant manager who totally fucked me over on scheduling and basically forced me to quit on the spot (so after 9 months of hard work I left without a reference to show for in the future [the main reason I took the job]). I've slowly lost my enthusiasm to better myself over the last 3 months because it seems like everyone in my small town are unmotivated and lazy bastards, and I've never really had a role model in my life to encourage me to do better anyway. But over the last few weeks I've been slowly getting back into my health and fitness routine in the hopes that kicks off more positive life choices. And hearing some of your stories gives me some drive to achieve excellence and find a passion. I know I say this every week, but you are such intelligent people. I've never seen a group with so much wisdom and the capability of articulating and relating it to me. Just want to let you know you all play an important role in my life, and again, I thank you so much for it!

Interesting hearing you guys talking about young males out of work as I'm in that range without a job, less because i want to be out of a job but I injured my spine.

The trades comment hit home a bit as I'm always made fun of by friends and family (especially the ones from America and Canada) as i left school at a young age, so no high school diploma.

So sure i can't spell, I can't do algebra, and I can't do my taxes to save my ass. But I was a qualified butcher with 6 years experience in the trade at the age of 19 making 25 dollars an hour, working 60 hours a week doing physical work that i loved while i sang loudly and swore with/at my workmates about sport.

When my injury first happened i was crushed i had to leave my job in fact it was the first time since i was 13 i didn't have a job to do, I found myself in depression as i had to move back in with my parents and all i did was sit on the couch all day playing games and watching nothing on TV until 3am.

After 6 months i decided that i was over it and with my last money i had from my job i brought a shitty laptop, broken mic, a capture card that only recored in 480p and a shitty handy cam and started making FIFA videos. You guys have inspired me a hell of alot since the IG days. Because of that i got into Photoshop and Premier Pro creating funny pics and edits to put over top of my FIFA gameplay.

That let me into creating posters for a Pro Wrestling promotion I'm involved with, also flyers for my family's company and Tshirts for my wrestling friends to sell on show nights.

I'm currently 15 weeks into a 17 week intake to finish the first 4 of 8 papers in a Digital Film Diploma. And in a year and a half time i will have both a Diploma in Digital Film and a Diploma in Digital Photography. Hopefully i can do some freelance stuff for companys around the world and make money that way as i'm incapable of working in a office or in set times due to my injury.

Hope you guys know how much you inspire ppl in your community and I hope you didn't die of old age reading this fucking long ass comment. Cheers guys and not all unemployed males 18-25 are just sitting at home with our thumb up our ass waiting for a job to find us. :)  benson-32.png
