It stinks that Lawrence had such a terrible experience with the Rift. I have absolutely loved mine and still play it daily. He should give it a second shot with a completely different Rift, perhaps not a launch one. I do completely agree with him about the PSVR though as I also massively enjoyed it though I still feel as if the Rift is a better overall experience, but obviously at the cost of a significantly more expensive entry price.

There were a ton of VR games that were mind blowing this year with only more to come in the future. I'll list all of my favorites that I've played this year. Note that I am literally immune to motion sickness so if you are prone to motion sickness this might not be the best list.

My favorite games for the Rift are Chronos. Feral Rites, Damaged Core, Lucky's Tale, Raw Data, House of the Rising Sun, Dead and Buried, Edge of Nowhere, Subnautica, the Assembly, Time Machine VR, the Windlands, and Eve Valkyrie.

My favorite games for the PSVR are Wayward Sky, Battlzone, Tethered, Job Simulator, Rigs, Batman VR, Robinson the Journey and Driveclub VR.

Great year for VR and can't wait to see what else they do with it. Really looking foward to Robo Recall for the Rift and Farpoint for PSVR for next year!

James, please read, or don't, but I wonder if you agree that TV shows provides more compelling character development and drama than movies can possibly achieve in ~120 minutes. Those who do don't necessarily get the $$$, so not to recognition they need to peak the interest of people high up with big bucks to invest in some script that may bomb. Basically, people generally are going to the movies to see an event and not a character in a movie.. I think you have probably have said this in some form but I just came here to say I agree... But do you agree that TV could be taking away some creative talent from the movie market because there is more freedom and failure is more "accepted". What I mean is for every Mr. Robot (great show) there is 10 Royal Pains... I personally don't think that Donald Trump / social media effects why people go to the movies.

To James' point about movies: I think you're right that the current trend in film leans toward spectacle over character or "depth," for lack of a better word--but I think he attributes the wrong cause.  While social media is a factor in this trend, I think the rise of quality television, both traditional and internet-based, is a much larger factor.  Not only does a series give the characters in question much more time to develop, but it allows me to do so at my own pace and maybe take a break to let a major plot point or character development sink in to my brain.  All of this takes place in the comfort of my own home.  Going to the movies feels intrinsically more like an event, and the massive screen makes audio/visual spectacles land both visually and emotionally harder for me.  Obviously there are exceptions to be found in both mediums, but I'm honestly pretty pleased with this split as it feels natural to me to expect some spectacle at the theater and some nuance and persistent development at home.

I like your take on the 'cause'. Just to add to it, if you look at the development of the medium of film in a theater, the technology has been trending towards bigger and louder and 3dy-er, and action action action obviously makes the best use of that. Pride and Prejudice would still be Pride and Prejudice on the biggest loudest screen in the world. It just doesn't make sense to be putting thought-heavy content on the big screen anymore.

    • Royalimpact FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I agree but think it really boils down to just the internet to a certain degree. It's just a housing for tons and tons of different options for people to receive their drama in a much more constant and rapid pace than they can through film for a variety of reasons. So since for the average American film is a bit of a spectacle they expect that in return. They get more visually impressive because we can't all afford that resolution or visual technology and so film is more enjoyable on that big impressive screen and the sound is heavy. They literally emulate it all in home theater to give cinema lovers the home experience. You don't build a home theater to watch The Notebook, you do it to watch 300 and Avatar and other movies that weren't great but looked so awesome on that big screen.

I think James seemed to make it out like a negative but not really feel that way... I think it was more his realization that he has to accept that going in to be able to appreciate the film, because for him the depth of character or story were enjoyable as well.

Interesting you say about the expectation of losing many times before eventually winning re: fighting games. I'm 21 and I don't know if it's because there weren't many, or that I just didn't play them, but I don't remember any games where I just had to bang my head against it and suck until I didn't suck quite as much and could beat the part I was stuck on. I'm ashamed to say it, but I was the kid that would throw a temper tantrum if he lost. I'm well past that now, but I really could've done with that kind of "You're shit, get less shit" attitude at that stage in life. It would've taught me a lot of lessons about failing that I've had to teach myself later in life.

I feel Rogue One is purposefully about the mission and the group of characters rather than specific individuals. In that regard it is similar to a war movie like Saving Private Ryan, in which you don't really know what motivates them to go beyond the call of duty, except for fighting the good fight against evil.

I think it is a valid choice for the story it tells, and I'm not sure the movie would have benefited from more extensive character development.

Look, I fucking LOVE Overwatch. But all the stuff you're praising Blizzard for, Valve did over 10 years ago and it still holds up. Overwatch is like an amazing Team Fortress 3 that made a lot of improvements on character design and interaction, but TF2 had characters make facial expressions based on what's going on in the match way past breathing heavily. And I'm starting to notice just how much they straight up copied, cause while Torb's level 2 and 3 sentries are one thing, Winston's ult is pretty much the same thing as a Tank in L4D, right down to the arm waving animation. Now I'm just wondering if they ever played TF2 for a significant amount of time, there are still some things it does better than Overwatch and vice versa.

You're gonna have to stand at the back of the line, and it's a long one, if you want a turn 1to bash Blizzard for never ever ever coming up with their own ideas.

Well I like the game and there are plenty of new mechanics they created but I'm more surprised the guys are so impressed with things that were done a decade ago. TF2 and L4D had characters interacting with each other or making facial expressions at what happens in the game. I'm not mad at Blizzard, I'm just wondering if Fun Haus knows the similarities to TF2 since I've found nothing of it from their IG days.

The fighting game community isn't failing, in fact it's growing. James makes a good point though, the fact that it's just your own skill and the barrier to entry for new players makes them hard to get into now that they're no longer the only multiplayer option. SF5 focused on the competitive community and it did well in that regard, but didn't sell well without the mainstream players. TBH that sorta killed my interest in it when I spent time watching competitive SF4 and planned to pick up 5, but with no experience in playing it I didn't want to jump into the online play or get bored playing training mode for a couple weeks. I was fine doing that with Melee when I wanted to get into competitive play, but only because I had spent years playing it casually and knew the controls very well.

I still care about films with originality and three dimensional character, I enjoyed Rogue One, which has paper thin characters, but I enjoyed the action spectacle and the universe it expanded upon. It lacks in one department, but that doesn't make me completely dismiss the rest of the film that it did right.

Though the real films that stand out as great this year are the films that deliver on everything, like Arrival or Nocturnal Animals. I can enjoy fun blockbusters for what they are, but at the end of the day I gravitate more towards smaller character driver drama's and they will stay with me longer.

Devil's Advocate for Walking Dead, in parts of the southern U.S., there pretty much isn't a "winter".

As an example, I live in southern Arkansas(Walking Dead filmed some of season 7 nearby recently), and right now(12/27) it's 68F outside, lol.  I could literally count the number of days I've had to wear a jacket this year on one hand, hah!
