I'm playing the Divison Beta as they talk about this, and I am having fun playing it solo, I can only imagine how fun it would be with friends, but I'm one of those guys that really likes Destiny, I have fun with it, and I agree with Adam, don't ruin other people's fun, ya fuckin' shit heads :D

I don't get why they seem to think that people can't be excited about the "loot and shoot" thing Division. Look how big Destiny was. This is just Destiny for the military FPS crowd. Probably won't end up being as big, but I don't see why it can't work.

I will say: the Division looked so cool in those original teaser gameplay videos, but even at the time I figured it looked too good to be true and that they would be removing features. The story could be so amazing, but it will probably just end up being generic garbage like with Destiny. And yes, it does suck that Tom Clancy's name doesn't mean anything any more.

Not sure if it pertains to Dude Soup, but there have been issues with podcasts not updating on some services lately because of a change in some software. I think Gus said it was an iTunes issue, but who knows. The advice has been to unsubscribe and then resubscribe. Hope that helps

I feel like the premise of division is fairly unrealistic, first, the NYPD does not fuck around, and new yorkers wouldn't just turn on each other. It only has manhattan which I have a problem with, I think its not enough. These gripes are so regional but I really do feel like without those things, its kind of a shallow portrayal of the city. (Even if it's almost one-to-one) If GTA can do a good fake-LA and Watchdogs can do the bland midwest, ubisoft can do better with New York.

"first, the NYPD does not fuck around"

What the hell does that even mean?

"and new yorkers wouldn't just turn on each other"

I think it's hilarious that you think that.

" It only has manhattan which I have a problem with, I think its not enough."

Seriously? You're angry at a game because they didn't include part of a city that YOU wanted? Do you have any idea how insanely entitled you sound?

"These gripes are so regional but I really do feel like without those things, its kind of a shallow portrayal of the city. (Even if it's almost one-to-one) If GTA can do a good fake-LA and Watchdogs can do the bland midwest, ubisoft can do better with New York."

Really? Because you've made it pretty clear that if anyone DARED to portray New York in any way that doesn't make it shine as a beacon of light in a dark world, where everyone lives in perfect harmony and don't need no electricity, that you would go ape about it. If you are any representation of what New Yorkers are like, then they are being generous in their portrayal. You realize that just because something HAPPENS to take place in the city of New York, that it doesn't HAVE to be purely about the city itself, right? Like, you understand that it's called a setting, right? It's a backdrop for the story to take place in.

    • noelmurray15

calm down lmao, literally new york is than just manhattan.

    • noelmurray15

I complain bc we don't get good representation ever besides shows made by new yorkers too

    • Picket

Then maybe this is about Manhattan rather than New York. And what the hell cities DO get positive portrayals? New York gets more than most. And you act like is a negative one: it's not. This could have taken place anywhere and it would have been the same. It's a post-apocalyptic game. People aren't going to wave and smile as they pass you on the street. Not like they do that in any big city anyway.

i think when it comes to gamers who go on rampages about games like destiny and how they're not getting their free items/dlc/whatever it may be, it could have a lot to do with the generation or their certain age group. lawrence and spoole discuss how raids would take hours and hours in the early 2000's and adam talks about how not having the internet sort of affected the way he looked at games at a younger age.

so it's a lot of the high demand, high value, need it now/want it now kind of mentality that gamers have been known (and obviously looked down upon) for, but the idea of "taking a step back" isn't something that crosses their mind. why this is, i have no idea, but of course not every individual gamer is like that, it's just the ones that are pointed out/discussed the most.

i also think that it has a lot to do with the large amount of games coming out in a short period of time, the time in between the game release and the expected dlc, how well it works, how long it works, is it worth it, etc. the people who shout about "this game sucks because i read it from here!" are the ones who want all or nothing, which is what taking your time to play a game seems to be about now: either it's perfect or it sucks, there's no in between.

There was a glitch in Dota 2's International Tournament. The biggest in Dota pretty much. One team found a glitch where they could more or less insta-kill one player on the other team. They went unpunished and won the whole thing. Straight after that game it was hot fixed.

I always thought division was another zombie survival game but without zombies. So.. DayZ during a few months a while back due to shit zombie AI in a zombie game. But I digress.

Hearing it is more like Destiny that survival based makes me even less interested.

Hey Adam. Just wondering if you actually have an issue with Android OS or with products running android? It sounded like you had a problem with android, when most products just use the OS, which means that the problems with your shield have nothing to do with Android, its completely Nvidia's issue.

I know it isn't much about the subject of this podcast but I will say, I love that they are playing Dragon's Dogma! It is one of my favorite games from last gen. It is also the only game that I ever 100% in since it was just fun to play. I was sad that not a lot of people played it when it first came out, but now, it has gained a larger audience now that is in PC. I hope this changes Capcom's mind about bringing the Dragon's Dogma MMO over to the west and even a chance for Dragon's Dogma 2.

I'm excited for The Division for a few reasons, some of which you guys thankfully touched on during the podcast. For some reason I am fascinated by the idea of a post-apocalyptic setting, which is why I like games like Fallout and, to some extent, DayZ. It goes to what Adam said about escapism. I never actually want to live through or experience the collapse of society in real life, but I do want to explore it in video game form.

Another reason I'm excited for it is because of the multiplayer aspect. I have the hardest time with single player RPGs, and it is very rare that a single player experience can hold my attention. That is why I like Destiny. Regardless of whatever problems it has, the fact that I can be joined by my friends at any point is awesome to me. And now that Destiny, for the time being, has gotten stale again, my friends and I are excited to explore New York and play through the game together.

My friend and I got into the alpha and we were so excited by what we played, we really wish our other friends had gotten into the alpha with us as well. Now that the beta is right around the corner, we're trying our best to make sure we can get our friends in to join us because I do honestly feel like the game will be a lot of fun. To me, it has the same appeal DayZ (mod) had. You're in a hostile environment and you need to scavenge what you can to survive. What broke DayZ was the fact that it was a mod off a mil-sim game, which basically meant if you got a sniper rifle and found a good camping spot you could essentially "win" the game. Not to mention the clunkiness of the game as a whole. From my experience, The Division doesn't have that (forgiving some of the issues experienced in the alpha). Different weapons are actually a viable choice because of the RPG elements.

Of course, this is all based off what I experienced during the alpha and I'll have to see what the beta has in store, but right now my excitement for the game is still high and I can't wait to explore the game further.

I hate to be that guy, but I hope the story/universe is worthy of Tom Clancy's name. Ubisoft, please don't ruin a potentially amazing franchise and universe just because no one likes story mode anymore.

From my point of view WoW started this whole loot grind circle. Before WoW most "MMO" games that had competitive PvP game modes the top PVP armor was player made. even wow at its start was like this. You leveled up, you got the proper gear crafted/enchanted with resistances to fight other players, then you played the multiplayer game types. Once you got to that point though it was understood that you were pretty much done progressing in gear and that your success was based on your skill (and your team) and meta gaming. No one else who was also at that level had an advantage just because they played the game more beyond that point.

This is what lead to the rise of MOBA's rather then WoW battlegrounds as a competitive eSport. MOBA's emulate the progression of an MMO in a single 1 hour match. You start with nothing, you level up, and you buy exactly the gear you need for that game. You are on a level playing field with everyone else in the game no matter how many times you have done it.

It's to bad, I will always remember pre BC WSG as one of my favorite PVP expericenes right behind anything in eve online.

I am very interested in The Division. But I am also slightly worried with the game in the state it appears to be coming out in March. Perhaps because of all the games of late that didn't live up to their E3 hype and original trailers have made me this way. But honestly it's because I have gotten to used to signs of possible bad things happening. Most notibly is when features and elements are dropped. Perhaps for good reasons and ultimately the best decision for the game as a whole. But I also see what appears to be a lot of depth being lost in the elements that have been dropped and the over all 'feel' of the game has gotten a lot more shallow.

The game may be a lot closer to the E3 than I imagine, but honestly I think it looks like a game that has been stripped of a lot of what makes it what it is. It checks the boxes and makes all the right moves. But it is worryingly short looking and I think the game will not be that open scale as we all wanted. Which is a detriment to this game, as the scale is what makes it interesting, I can only hope the DLC opens up more of the city and increase the depth a lot more as well.

This is speculation, so it may well be off the mark. But it's got a lot of the signs of changes that are never in the best interest for the original game.

I'm also super excited and slightly worried for the same reasons. I'm a HUGE Tom Clancy fan and even though he's passed and didn't write much for The Division (if any at all), a lot of work went in to make it a very Tom Clancy idea, which I can appreciate more than R6: Siege, which I sometimes forget is called Rainbow 6 because of how un-Clancy it is. I'm also bummed R6 Patriots was scrubbed for the same reason; it was an actual Rainbow 6 game about Rainbow 6 with a story that sounds like it came straight out of a Clancy book, which is what The Division is shaping up to be. I really hope The Division has somewhat of a story that doesn't even have to tell a story more or less, but create another universe that sets the path for expansion, like R6 and Ghost Recon. But it seems like Ubisoft is focusing on the same thing everyone else is; multiplayer. Open world instance-based games that rely on leveling and loot, rather than tell a story or even have any bit of expanded universe. And for some games it works (sort of). Destiny was a new franchise and if it's not supposed to have a backstory, fine. SW Battlefront has always been just a big team battle simulator with a campaign rather than a story, because it doesn't need one. There's plenty of Star Wars universe with story. Even Call of Duty can benefit from a multiplayer-only game because let's face it, who plays the stories anyway? It's a skill based shooter that changes with every title. But Clancy games are supposed to have a semblance of universe to them, even if it's not explained in the game's story, and it's starting to look like Ubisoft is starting this universe with nothing behind it. R6, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon all existed in the same universe through most of their storylines, hopefully Ubisoft continues that with The Division, at least in a way we can understand.

Tl;dr I'm looking forward to President Jack Ryan or a cameo from Ding Chavez.
