The internet is barley a utility. It isn't like sewer and water where a person pays to hook up but often a municipality still treats that for the public. With the internet people pay the company to hook up, while the company pays taxes to even provide the service; usually per yard of line in an area. The issue comes from people think this is a national issue, its not. it is your city council, county commissioners, state legislatures that negotiate franchise agreements and co-ops, not congress.

I think the internet is good being treated as a utility. Because of how integrated it is in everyone's lives. And I'm thinking this is important enough to enough people that it is a national issue.

    • kmasterc FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Garth i didn't say it's not a utility, but that it is barely one. But the man issue with your argument is that access is regional. The boys said the biggest issue for not having net-neutrality is no competition. that is an issue for the franchisor, whether is it the city, county or state. They can ask for neutrality, or they can also negotiate a cap on bandwidth for their region. those contracts are made locally, why make it a federal issue instead of holding local politicians accountable?

    • zero_requiem FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Because the local politicians don't have the power to do anything about the 3 ish companies that run the internet. I'd also say it's a utility for the very reason that it's essential for things like, school, and getting jobs. I haven't applied for a job in the last 6 ish years that didn't require me to have email, or to fill out stuff online.

Zero I would say you are right except I am a county commissioner negotiating a franchise agreement right now. Local politicians have more power than you are giving them credit for.

With all due respect Bruce, isn't it somewhat of a contradiction to promote Net Neutrality (and agree with the concept of the internet being a government controlled utility in which everyone has equal access to it) and then say the sentence "That's why I like Capitalism". Isn't making something a government controlled utility in order to make it equally available to everyone regardless of how rich or poor you are is a Socialist idea?  The idea of Corporations owning these utilities, and controlling who gets them, and then charging whatever they want for them in order to gain excessive profits, without regulation from the government, is entirely Capitalist. Unless I'm misunderstanding something? Thoughts?

    • gugam99 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I think that idea supports a full free market, but that's not what most modern capitalism is. The ISPs don't work in the same way most free markets due because they largely run local monopolies and duopolies, so there can be no competition to enforce a healthy free market. Hence the need for government regulation

internet is an oligopoly, just like utilities, most people only get 1 option. I live in LA and my neighborhood only gets timewarner/charter. Utilities are heavily regulated for its nature of lacking competition, internet is an utility and should be regulated just so.

You guys hit on a lot of the key points in defense of keeping Net Neutrality, but you failed to mention a big one that should resonate with Rooster Teeth as a company:  Dismantling Net Neutrality could potentially stifle American innovation on the web significantly.  Follow my logic here:  It's a reasonable assumption to make that if end-users(customers) are being charged extra to access their content of choice then the content providers will be charged extra as well.  It's the same business plan as cable television in which customers are charged a monthly subscription, networks(content creators) are charged fees to be listed in a cable package and advertisers pay to, well, advertise.  Does it stand to reason that the large behemoths of content creation such as Disney, Comcast and Universal will have an even greater advantage in the form of entry costs when compared to a brand new startup?

How do you think Rooster Teeth in 2003 would have fared if it had to pay the various ISP's across the country a fee just so users could see your content?  Would Rooster Teeth exist today?  Would Youtube?  Would Netflix?  Or would we be watching some embedded video on a Disney website while the rest of the world has access to innovation?

Bruce sort of says it by comparing this issue to the idea of forcing people not to read or write.

I do agree 100% though. If I lose my internet access as is then there is no way I could do countless photoshops or video editing I am doing now. I will either be very limited or outright lose my choice of being a creator (as small as one I am as of right now). That is just insane considering the environment we are in now with the COUNTLESS amount of creators we have.

The fact we haven't stop the FCC from doing this, like how we stopped the Senate from taking away our healthcare, as of right now is infuriating.

    Writing Half Life 3:
Really cool gun idea(s): disintegration laser, dismantling handbombs, sticky paste launcher

Cool gameplay: in space, limited to a space station, but open world-ish, story progress unlocks areas, but sequence break possible with some puzzle solving. Oh and you get to have the power of the aliens.

Hard netting needs the groxt1 on youtube he actually has a cult of subscribers that either believe in him telling the truth about how everything that is currently trending leads to the apocalypse either that or everyone is trolling him and feeding his theories which is even funnier considering he truely believes the end is nigh because of ariana grande or any new movie.

LIDAR is basically the same thing as RADAR except it uses laser light pulses instead of radio wave pulses.

    • oh_bother FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

That kind of LIDAR is seen a lot on things like self driving cars (see the DARPA challenge) it basically does a single distance measurement point, but is spinning 360 degrees. (the ones at seeed studio are much smaller more consumer-ey types) WAY more accurate than radar since it's measuring the time of flight of a laser dot, instead of an expanding RF wave. You can scan that 360 degree line around and build a map of the area (within 8 meters). I would love to tinker with one, but the price to play is way too high.

Net neutrality is only politicized when those who stand to gain from the dismantling of it tell you its a senseless government regulation and not essentially what keeps the "free market" "free" online. Whats to stop netflix from paying comcast to stifle bandwidth from other streaming competitors? I currently have comcast and 50% of the time when I try to look at packages from Frontier (the only other ISP in my area) I get a DNS error. Now is that coincidence or is it already a sign of net neutrality laws getting fucked? Bruce's monopoly laws don't apply to the online sphere as of right now.
