Hey Lawrence, I just want you to know I appreciated that life day celebration dig even if the others just breezed past it. EA should definitely make Chewbacca's wife and Grandpa unlockable characters. Hell lets throw in Jefferson Startship and those freaky circus aliens too

EA could have just copied the og Battlefront 2 and people would have LOVED it, and they decide to do the cash grab. I just don't understand.

    couple of things

    1. that account spouting about the deathreats was bullshit, never works at EA and never received death threats

    2. dice cant really do skins on heroes because everything they do has to go through Lucas arts, for instance a samurai Darth Vader would never be allowed to pass because it doesn't fit into the universe.

The EA decision was a textbook bully move. "I've abused this person and been met with only protests, let's see how far can I go until I get actual resistance". Gamers only persuaded their bully to hit them in the stomach rather than the face (for now). Gamers are a reliable victim, they only complain never unite enough. Companies know they can do anything they wan't with an occasional PR apology or content patch.

We're in a new era of manipulation as two of the largest companies have simultaneously attempted the push the line. EA went bold in your face "What you gonna do about it?" and Activision went with a manipulative under the radar move. Activision is eyeballing compulsive purchase behavior and EA is just saying "Fuck you, you'll buy it". Sure enough people did/will buy and complain about it and others will think it's not their problem. EA is not deterred in the least nor Activision, their money is guaranteed.

The most interesting part with the EA debacle is players who pre-ordered BFII were a big reason why so many got a heads up about the situation. Though at the same time what EA pulled is one of thousands of examples of why most people shouldn't pre-order a game to begin with.

Game reviewers are bought and paid for as are many youtubers, so no real answer there.

Hard to put a solution into effect when most of your team are crack heads who can't help but get their fix.  weary

I have 3700 hours in Runescape. Which is a giant game with a ton of content. I still have yet to do everything in it. I could not imagine putting that much time into a first person shooter like battlefield. But this has an active membership feature which is what gives the rest of the game. So not really relevant...

EDIT: I wrote this very shortly into watching this episode, but I am not going to edit the original point any, just know that I had not watched this episode XD

I have not seen anyone bring this point up and I just want it thrown out there, I feel really bad for the dev team that made the game. They had to make all those characters (vader etc) and assuming they are not auto win OP b/c they are so hard to unlock (and even if) no one is going to get to experience all the hard work they put in. I have a degree if in Video Game and Application Development, I have not done anything even jokingly comparable in scale to Battlefront, but a lot of work went into making that content that most people won't get. I feel really bad for them knowing they put effort (and surely passion) into making content that, assumedly, EA is preventing people from being able to experience.

Guys if you don't want to support Battlefront 2 but you want to play, don't buy the game new, buy it preowned and don't spend any money on micro-transaction. The money you spend to buy the game preowned at Gamestop, Amazon, Ebay, Craigslist, or even your friend doesn't get sent back to EA and they don't make any money on the transaction. Buy games new to support the companies and developers you favor and simply wait the 2 to 3 weeks to buy games preowned for companies or developers you don't like or want to support, but regardless of the fact want to still play the game. Vote with your wallet and here is how you do it.

I think you kinda hit on the reason stuff like this game fails, or at least has so much backlash.  Disney expects world-class revenue, and then makes a product to match.  EA expects that just being Star Wars is enough, and doesn't make the product to match.

Sure it costs a billion dollars to go to Disney World, but its a complete theme park once you're there.  This game is like paying to get through the gate, but then every ride costs additional money, except the Tea Cups and Small World.  I bet the park would be much less crowded if that was the case.

EA are like a horde of zombies. They eat up everything good and turn it into a horrible zombie until it rots and dies. Then they stitch it to something else then slap some paint on it. Mass Effect 3 was the beginning of the phoned in awful, buggy, paywalled multiplayer they started enforcing be put into all their games.

  • CharlesAtlas FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I gotta say, this is pretty disappointing. It's such a simple thing, Sell the game for like $40, and unlock all the cool stuff. Put all the cosmetic in multiple item loot boxes that can be earned and opened through straight gameplay, as well as purchased with real money. Different hero costumes, storm trooper and droid variants (colors, uniforms, etc.), throw in player icons, maybe badges or stickers you can put on your characters armor. They don't even need to generate interest in the lore to make people want cool looking stuff from Star Wars, people already know enough about it. Then make those rarer items available from random currency drops in the loot boxes so that even if you don't get what you want by chance you can still work toward it. People who are even slightly drawn to paying for that kind of content will be easier to coax if the game was below retail and getting the loot is as fun as a game like, say, Overwatch. Then, using loot box money, releasing free dlc for everyone will drive both sales of the games and sales of those in-game loot drops.

I was excited for a story but to be honest they should just make a separate game with better mechanics to fulfill a single player star wars experience. Republic Commando anyone?

I mean, I wouldn't even be mad seeing them selling like gift cards at Gamestop for older relatives to buy for kids for the holidays that are specifically like 10 or 20 loot boxes. Just my opinion though, would anyone else be more inclined to pay into a Battlefront like that?

To be clear, James' comparison to Fifa Ultimate Team at approximately 38:00 wasn't exactly accurate, understandable for people who don't play the game. It actually works very similar to this in the sense that earning enough money to buy better players has a very direct gameplay impact as the player is able to use them in games against the AI or other players. Its even spending money on packs (essentially loot crates) hoping to get players good enough to sell for a lot of coins. I think the difference is that with Soccer/Football, it is a globally followed sport much more than just in the US and people have been spending money in this way for years now.

@roloman95 Okay yeah I can agree with that. but whats to say that if EA did just remake it they could have changed it a bit then put the loot boxes in anyway. Also did you play the new Battlefront in the Beta, just curious on how you actually feel about the game minus the loot box crap

@gilly88 I did play in the beta and thought it looked and played great. The graphics were fantastic, controls were pretty decent, but the progression is the issue I had in the beta. In the beta when you leveled up you didn't unlock anything... you were just given a loot box. That to me is not how a multiplayer shooter progression should work.

I'll give Overwatch a pass because you only unlock skins and other things that don't affect gameplay.

How about people just play the game the bought and not throw their plastic rectangle at the screen because they are lazy. People complain about a game not taking up their time, and what it sound like to me is if you want a good hero play the damn game. If you don't want to play the game you bought, for 60 bucks, waste you money on useless things. Yeah this might be annoying when the game first comes out when dumb people throw money at the screen, but in a month everyone will be around the same level. The game still requires you to aim, if there was a star card that gave you auto aim you could just buy(because you have to hope you get stuff from the lootboxes you buy). If you could buy specific characters and cards with real money that is wrong, but the ability to be lazy and skip the game you bought is fine because i'm not a lazy fuck who throws money away i'd rather play the game i just spent 60 dollars on and not increase the game's price by buying lootboxes. Hell i think destiny is worse because after all the PVE it's only PVP and you are required to use the guns that are in the PVP meta. You can just buy bright engrams to get the gun before someone else and wreck in PVP, isn't that also PW2?

I'm sure you guys have heard about this by now (Lawrence has at least) but EA didn't actually change the ratios as far as unlocks go. They took down the points required to unlock those characters by 75%, but they also lowered the rewards by the end of the campaign by 75%. So instead of changing it for the better, they sent a giant "fuck you" to their entire fanbase, again.

I don't have a horse in this race, I wasn't going to buy the game anyway. But it's hard to excuse that kind of fuckup.

I disagree with Lawrence: the problem is not that people are in this capitalist society, the problem is that people aren't capitalist enough

People don't understand that the market is dependent upon supply and demand. Clearly the people on reddit have used their voice as consumers, and the result is the decrease in the paywall for Darth Vader and Luke. As you said, "In a capitalist society, why wouldn't you do whatever makes you the most money." Well, obviously the paywall for Vader and Luke ISN'T the way to make the most money, because enough people said they wouldn't pay for it.

EA may still use a paywall, and whether or not that is acceptable is a different issue. The problem lies with economic misunderstanding, yes - but it also has to do with aesthetic ethics. If enough people decided they would not pay for games with a paywall, there would not be a paywall. You can argue, of course, that people don't have enough discipline or forethought to realize that change - but then that isn't solved with a different economical structure: no matter the structure: capitalist, socialist, communist, etc., there would still be a loophole that companies/the government would use to exploit consumers. So what does solve the problem? Here's two ideas, each are very difficult to realize, but serve to specify the problem rather than just place the problem under a blanket statement of "capitalism".

    (1) You can improve schools and a more educated populace would make better decisions. Of course that's easier said than done, but it is more specific and more informative than merely saying this is a "capitalist" issue. After all, nationalizing the video game industry (looking at this as a capitalist-socialist dichotomy) would not serve to fix the greed of video game marketing. People in government are much more corrupt, I would argue, than people who want to a) make video games, and b) sell video games. An improvement in schooling would also serve to combat infantilism which is very prevalent in America. What do I mean by this: there are two meanings of "nerd" in America. One is the "popular" meaning, and the other is the "traditional" meaning. The popular meaning of "nerd" in America is ascribed to a set of (now the majority) people who enjoy "pop-culture" (superheroes, anime, video games, etc.). The traditional meaning of "nerd" in America is anyone who enjoys learning. There are two facets to this.

One is the frankly abhorrent obsession of Americans to be "popular", and this means that you have to portray yourself as not-dumb, but also not-smart, and as long as you do this, people will like you. Of course, going to the library, speaking up in class, reading for fun, and getting good grades, means you have less time to worry about how people perceive you, and you're made out to be a social pariah and these things are considered "bad" by association - In that they do not contribute to your "popular-ness"

The second facet is the distortion of the word itself, following my first point. Being a "nerd" is seen as bad, because it does not make you "popular". However it seems like now being a "nerd" is cool, but that's only the popular meaning of "nerd". You can like superheroes and anime and video games, and that's fine, I'm all for people liking what they want to like. The problem is that it still reflects an obsession with popularity. Being a "nerd" in the popular sense doesn't mean you read Aristotle or practice mathematics for fun. That's the traditional sense of the word, and it is still looked down on, by the popular "popular" people, AND the popular "nerd" people. This isn't a capitalist issue, this is a human issue. A cultural issue. A problem having to do with what I call "Infantile America".

    (2) A revolution in Aesthetic Ethics. I despise and admire Disney (mostly despise). Disney gives creators the tools to make beautiful art, but instead of fostering that art Ethically, they turn snow white (one of the greatest animations of all time) into flip flops, or into whatever money making scheme they can divine. Is this a capitalist issue? No, it's an ethical issue. This issue also has two parts.

First, people don't value their money. Instead of spending their money to invest in an independent developer, people spend their money on whatever game comes out that other people tell them to buy. Why? They want someone to tell them what to spend money on, because they have been told all their lives that valuing money is a "sin", "materialistic", what-have-you. But this isn't a capitalist or a socialist issue. This is an objective-subjective issue. If you tell people that morality is relative: that means that morality has a net value of zero, until they arrive at wherever they are going to, and then morality has whatever value the people there give it. Except that's a completely bankrupt way of looking at morality. Gay marriage was seen as purely evil in America in the early 20th century, so by a relative view, Gay marriage had a negative moral value at that time. Except, as we know, that's not true. Gay marriage is not evil. It doesn't matter if you go to China or India or Saudi Arabia. To return to the issue of money: I can't use any method other than money [in any kind of market whatsoever] to communicate how much I value a game or a film. Money, then, unless we regress to a bartering economy, is an objective value. Artists will agree with me, people who expect you to work for free [for exposure] don't understand how unacceptable that request is. Exposure isn't a guarantee, money is money (neither good nor bad) Why is this important? Because for some reason we are completely comfortable with an objective code of moral ethics, but we are hesitant to say that there is an objective code of aesthetic ethics. I will talk about this in the next section.

Next, we hear all the time: art is subjective. Why? If we adopt a relative, subjective approach to art, aren't we as wrong as we are when we are relative about morality? Furthermore, history backs us up. Suprematism was the "great" subjective experiment of the U.S.S.R, and it died with the U.S.S.R. Any artistic tradition that dies with a civilization isn't worth squat. Contrast this to works like the Parthenon, to the Illiad, to the Mona Lisa. Works which survived their time periods, and have endured. I'm not trying to define what the objective values for art are at this moment, nor am I trying to make claims about beauty. I'm merely arguing against what people typically say about art - that it is subjective. Why? Well, Star Wars Battlefront II is a beautiful work of art. Just like one could argue that Transformers 5, and Thor Ragnarok (not saying one is better than or worse than the other) are works of art. No matter how bad or good these movies are, they are the only avenue of work that CGI artists are allowed to pursue at this moment - and it is no stretch to say that these CGI artist work very hard to produce beautiful movies and games. But when we say that art is relative or subjective: we say that it does not matter that much. If you don't value art, then you ruin it with stupid paywalls and with Disney's disgusting marketing strategy.

Most of Battlefront 2 has looked bad. Level design looks worse than Battlefield 1. You die immediately. The story had so much promise and some developer was talking about how stormtroopers never take off their helmets and how powerful a moment it'd have to be to make a soldier take off their helmet and I was like yeah! They get it!

Then the story has it happen like twice a mission.

I honestly just want the game to go back to the way the original two Battlefront's were

im a big Star Wars fan, bought the EA Battlefront I when it was on sale and i think ive played less than 10 hours, yes the game is beautiful (no one should be blaming specific devs and threatening them on social media) BUT i found the gameplay quite lackluster and boring and the inability to unlock things a major reason i walked away and refused to buy the new one

Honestly, if you want to play a good star wars game just go back and play the old ones for their in depth singleplayer modes and mechanics (yes old and janky i know but still better spending time on that then spending money and/or time in the EA ones)

Although it sucks completely not to have all the heroes from the start, I'm not actually that bothered. They have Boba Feet unlocked who I always chose throughout BF1 and the Beta. And on the other side I never did as well as a Jedi as I did a normal troop and would always just go for a jump trooper instead.

This is a pretty good point that they didn't get around to because Adam was cut off for being "too grand" EA only bough a license they didn't buy the rights to change anything about original star wars and if disney are as anal as they appear to be this video makes a lot of sense.

The change isnt really there. Even though theres been a 75% reduction in heroes, they also reduced the amount of credits you earn in game as well.  People who got 20,000 in the campaign noticed that they now earned 5,000 as well as a reduction in what they earned in multiplayer matches so the illusion of change is prominent.

Considering EA's comment regarding the posts is currently at -500,000 downvotes on Reddit, I think the Battlefront franchise is going to be dead for quite some time

As much as I wish that to be the case I don't really think that's the way these things work. The driving factor HAS to be the money, otherwise we wouldn't find ourselves here in the first place, and unfortunately I feel like the majority of people playing these lootbox/lockout-ridden games are casual players who just wanna see some explosions and don't really care about how they get that. I don't see those people as being really cognizant about the implications of their dollars the way that we are.

This was super informative but also a little depressing. As someone who is neither a huge Star Wars fan nor a big fan of multiplayer games what concerns me the most about companies like EA doing these blatant money grabs is how it will affect single player properties that they might own. The Dragon Age series is one of my all-time favourites and the combination of all this Star Wars nonsense plus their next big game (Anthem) seeming to be VERY multi-player focused, I'm just really bummed out about what that might mean for a Dragon Age 4. I know that there are still a lot of great single player games being released (and thank you Lawrence for that little list you made!) but just for me personally this doesn't bode well for a series that I adore :( I hope I'm proven wrong!

Isn't publicizing the fact that you received death threats only giving them what they want? It just kind of seems like one of those situations where you let it play out and then make your move, you probably shouldn't start announcing this type of thing as it's happening because it only gives those people what they want, attention. It seems like the best move is to keep track of the threats (like he is doing) and send them to the proper authorities and then only once justice has been dealt do you announce what happened. I would understand that he is distressed by this though so I hope it all works out for him in the end.

If you have a different perspective on the issue I hope you will talk to me and allow me the opportunity to see this issue from your perspective. It disheartens me when people dislike or downvote comments without explaining why or advocating for their perspective. I am hoping that if anyone has a problem with what I said they would take the time to explain why they disagree so I can learn and be better equipped to tackle touchy situations like this in the future. Thank you

I completely agree with your point, and people downvote literally everything on this site, I had a comment nearly identical to one someone posted after me on an AH video and I got -6 flamebait while they were upvoted +7 lol. I wouldn't worry about people that don't like what you say but aren't willing to articulate why.

People have tried ignoring that shit for years and they keep coming. That's giving power to the people sending death threats telling the receivers to be silent and that's probably more what they want. They want to be able to get away with it. They want to oppress people even in a petty way.

It's time the idiots throwing out death threats face justice of the legal sort, but letting people in a fanbase know that this is unacceptable and that you are reporting anyone doing it hopefully discourages the act.
