While I'm glad y'all brought up the idea of just paying a higher base price to get a game without microtransactions, I think there's an even better incentive for that than what you described. Rather than the idea of getting a whole bag of trinkets up front, I'm more interested in getting a game that was designed with no add-ons in mind in the first place, and was designed to progress reasonably via gameplay only.

For example, I've played remakes and ports of older games that come with all of their post-launch "updates" and add-ons right from the beginning for free, to which I thought to myself "cool". Then, part way through the game I realize, "oh crap, this made me too OP, now I'm not getting the intended experience and/or there's no challenge".

I realize not everyone thinks this way, but these days, when I play a game for the first time, I try to play it in a way that gives me a reasonable idea of how it was designed and intended to be played so that I can make a good assesment of how good the game is as a whole. But when a bunch add-ons get involved, or pay-to-win easier/faster trash becomes available, all it says to me is that the the devs (or publishers or other higher-ups) don't even have an intended experience that they wanted to give the players or don't care to begin with.

To me, it's like they're either saying "we sold you an incomplete game" or "here's some extra fluff that we didn't think was important enough to put in the game". Granted, sometimes the "extra fluff" can be fairly fun within the context of it being a extra, but I find the idea of expecting or planning on extras existing to be distasteful.

My friends and I all purchased the first battlefront game however none of us have purchased the second do to 1. not liking the first one for different reasons. and 2. all the negitive feed back on the second one. However i know of a poor soul who bought 3 copies of the game so he could give 2 of them away to his friends and have someone to play with.

I would absolutely love to see the star wars franchise go back to bioware; Knights of the old republic is fantastic still and although they may not make an online star wars game, I would much prefer a mass effect styled Star Wars campaign any day of the week over a typical shoot em up EA title

Rainbow six siege does something similar to what Lawrence said about buying everything for $90, where on steam they have a cheaper version of the game $15 but the basic operators cost more coins which are earned in matches (or you pay premium currency for them $5 per op).

I honestly think when it comes to micro transactions Siege does it right where every 3 months 2 new operators and a new map come out. You can purchase the operators with currency earned after each match, for $5 a pop, or you can buy a season pass for the year which costs $30 saving you $10.

The unlock system they're talking about is basically Rainbow 6 Siege. You can either pay extra to get everything or pay the base cheap cheap and unlock things with playtime.

in both episodes you guys have talked about EA and Disney having a stranglehold on the lore. Except you can play ANY dark/light side hero in ANY battle... Darth Maul on hoth? Sure why not. I don't believe for a second lore has anything to do with it.

I dont know what Lawrence means when he says unlocking Vader and Luke is still to hard. I have played for less then 5 hours and could have already unlocked one of the if i wasn't buying loot crates. you get so many credits for doing challenges when you first get the game. Yes 60,000 was way to high but 15,000 is easy.

Having played many Star Wars games, EA has screwed the whole franchise for me Starting with SWTOR, after the 10 episode/14-15 hours SP game, when what everyone wanted was new OpS FP's and PVP levels, not the loot boxes and getting content that is not as desirable after the 4th time you have played it. It destroyed the game for me as did the last Star Wars movie I'm personally done with it. But this does make me wonder if retro gaming is in my future because all of these new games are getting ridiculously expensive, you have to drop soo much more money. Then the Story like you guys mentioned is really not there. the Lore is A major part of why I played.

Evan Windgram can go screw himself lol, b/c loot boxes change that whole dynamic, if you do not get that item you want you have to buy more. SWTOR good example ppl were dropping 3-500 dollars a month to get a Rancor and never got one. I can't imagine doing that for Digital Content, which the company could take away any moment. You have nothing tangible.

I think the outcome here is going to pave the way a lot of companies will Monetize their games and whether Countries will start regulating them as well, b/c they have to be seeing the money coming through this medium also.

And WTF Bruce reads was disturbing.

The price increase always makes me think of an exec at a TV station I did a show for. I asked about advertising revenue and she said "My mentality on what to charge for ads, is I base it on what the market can bear" That is what I see whit the gaming industry. If more people will pay more money, then prices will rise.

Overwatch, Battlefield 1, CS:GO, PUBG, CoD: WW2. Does any FPS with a major playerbase not have some sort of micro-transaction model? Didn't play the most recent Halo and I'm not planning on Destiny 2, but honestly at some point I might get pushed towards games I might not normally play if they have less intrusive revenue models that either force micro-transactions to progress or remain competitive.

Destiny 2 does have microtransactions but they are very unobtrusive and (effectively) purely cosmetic.

Sorry for this wall of text, but I'm waiting for a flight and find this shit with EA interesting:

After hearing all of these numbers and that new "profit projections" release, this whole EA thing feels very similar to events involving a number of other gaming companies over the last few years. Of course this is at a much more massive scale, since this involves Star Wars, Disney, and EA corporate interests...

It is pretty interesting to see how different groups deal with issues like IP/franchise fanbase treatment and MTX drama. So often it sounds like "fuck 'em" (thanks Bruce), but with incredibly varying levels of self-awareness and tact. Less "mainstream" companies have tended to handle the implementation and fallout hilariously, but it is only funny due to the incompetence they've shown.

For instance, a few years back Games Workshop had a bunch of drama after pulling and redistributing licenses, revamping IPs, and generally exploiting or ignoring their audience. They ended up *trying* to shut their eyes and ears to criticism and tried to tell their investors that "the group no longer conducts or consults market research" and that "any profit from [video game] licensing would always be seen as incidental..."

...Yep, genius business strategy. We never saw the TRUE cost of those decisions for the company, though I find it telling how they ended up replacing their CEO and swapping out a few major people.

Jagex, publisher of Runescape, is another (bumbling) recent example. Their MTX has reached the point where they have been putting more into 'lootbox' updates than they have to their actual content by a large margin. They claimed that their games needed to have such massive MTX if Jagex was to continue to function, yet have reported record profits from all sources.

Despite this they have only managed to release *one* of their promised content updates for the year successfully, causing massive community backlash. Now they are trying to do damage control by making various nonbinding rollbacks on the more controversial shit and claiming that they will "make things better" in the future, all to limited effect.

However, I don't find EA's bullshit to be very funny, entirely for the reasons that you guys have mentioned. This really does feel like a massive, calculated plot by a company that is so wealthy and powerful that they can slowly erode resistance like this, at the risk of 'wiping out' investment in entire categories of AAA games.

It annoying when a few massive entertainment companies can just slap down their giant, dirty cocks and say "Suck it or go fuck yourself," and only have to apologize as much as promising to wash it next time. It is fucking insulting when they push these subtle ways 'punishing' their customers or 'dragging their feet' because they messed up.

I played battlefront 2 and was able to buy vader very quickly. The campaign throws challenges worth credit at you like crazy and you get a decent amount of credits playing if you are good. I suck(bottom 5 of team) and i get about 200-300 credits a game, my friend who is way better(top 5 of team) get like 500-600 credits. So if you play the game you can get those heroes with match credits, your daily crate(~175), and challenges.

I want to see a social experiment where games are just $60 without DLC, microtransactions or lootboxes. Instead you have a "donate" button that goes directly to devs and/or publishers. You get nothing when you donate, but the more money the game makes, the more post-release content everybody gets, for as long as the game keeps making money. Just on the off-chance the results aren't disappointing for everybody involved.

People don't even like donating money to people that actually need it, the only people I think would do that would be a small fraction of the types of people that turn off adblock to support creators, which is already a very small amount of youtube users.

i like battlefront 2. i though the single player was decent for a game that i don't think needed one, and just like the battefront it was just multiplayer maps with objectives, it wasn't new and shiny, but it worked. like every other dice game i assume the micro transactions will be back like in other dice games, so in half a year you will be able to progress for 20 dollars that others spends hours on end to get, like tank upgrades or darth vader, that is just dice games since battlefield bad company 2. I hope ea gives up on having free dlc exchanged with micro transactions and goes back to season passes, free dlc didn't work for titanfall 2 and it sure as shit isn't going to work for battlefront 2.

I believe it's a matter of quality. Sort of like the VoD version that Youtube saves vs. an actual recorded version with mixed vocals/edited vocals/audio.

That would let them put a podcast up on the site with a quick turn around for those that missed the livestream, and then when the edit for youtube gets finished, they can upload that here.

I could be wrong, but it is what I would do~
