Couldn't MCNs solve the curation problem? If there is a need for kid safe programming that Youtube is unwilling or unable to provide, why wouldn't multi-channel networks fill this economic void? Disney still owns a ton of Youtube creators don't they?

There was (and probably still is) an insert segment in the Tom and Jerry block of Cartoon Network that features a dog trying to get rid of a flea and he literally takes out a big box of DDT and washes himself with it and brushes his teeth with it ( DDT is one of the earliest and most powerful and environmentally destroying pesticides that has ever been used/banned). I learned about DDT getting banned in 4th grade science class but that is one of the most obscure inappropriate content that I believe still persists because people never noticed or complained.

Just an observation of how seemingly innocuous content can have some sensitive content unknowingly overlooked.

This Elsagate stuff makes me sick to my stomach.  I've asked two people now that I know with kids and BOTH of them said they caught one of these videos playing. I can only imagine how this lingers with these kids when they all grow up and together start to realize what they had seen.

You'd think Valve with all their money would make the god damn in game overlay have more function than internet explorer from the bloody 90s, That goes for the client too many times I've clicked on an embedded youtube trailer for a game only to have steam completely lock up and require restarting christ i hope they overhaul it soon.

back on topic: Is youtube profitable yet? that would likely explain a lot of these decisions.

"Oct 18, 2016 - "We are still in investment mode," YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki"

It still sounds like they are.

This whole youtubekids thing i didn't even know existed until it was mentioned here awhile back.

Appears to be another way for them to turn a profit from the platform overtime as was YTgamings donation 5% cut, YTRed etc.

It's a monolith, a crazy giant one that makes Google 0 profit at the moment.

So yeah oversight costs more money which makes the whole platform less profitable if you keep throwing more employees & farms at it, if they did what we all wanted it would likely become such a money sinkhole that they'd look to sell and dump onto another company to which given time would also dump and on and on until the platform is completely unrecognizable cashgrab city.

Dark times could be ahead unless Google is able to turn a profit that would allow enough expansion to ease just enough of the reliance on AI algorithms to remove the majority of these issues.

Honestly, with an income like youtube has gotta have, they shouldnt leave everything up to any sort of robot. im sure we all feel this way but it just seems lazy (and now seemingly dangerous) to let an unintelligent ai decide whats best for anyones kid. they should put their mfing hundreds of millions of dollars toward a real fucking huge manual staff and anything that gains more then 10k+ views should be manually reviewed. full stop.

    My fix for YouTube Kids:

On one of these Podcasts someone wished they could pre-vet content before it appeared on YouTube. This would be perfect for YouTube Kids. YouTube could require Content Creators to submit 5 pieces of their content to be vetted by a living person before being considered for a "YouTube Kids Content Creator" account. Then, once approved and before they finalize their account, YouTube could send them a nice, flowery worded warning that essentially reads "Listen, we're showing your content to kids. If you fuck up and show kids something we don't want kids to see, we will take all of the money you made in ad rev, slap you with a $1,000,000 fine, and all but literally fuck your mouth. Do NOT fuck up!" Then the pre-vetted Content Creators would have to check a box agreeing to those terms. This would allow YouTube to hire only a small vetting team that curates content to go specifically on YouTube Kids, verses the current model of a robot pulling content straight from YouTube and slapping a filter on it.

Also, when someone inevitably fucks up, since the Content Creators signed a contract, YouTube could legally stick their ass on a pike outside of the YouTube Space and show it to other content creators as a deterrent. YouTube could even show the body to parents as a way of proving how seriously they take their kids viewing safety.

This 5 video reviewal process should be enough to deter most trolls, and the threat of financial repercussions and death should be enough to deter the rest.

Now, in some parts of my suggestion I'm being hyperbolic, but the point still stands. If you set up enough hoops for someone to jump through, and big enough consequences if they fall, you can pretty effectively weed out the trolls, because some jokes just aren't worth it.

I have a 2 year old brother who has access to an Ipad. He is going through his terrible two's and my parents sometimes just need a break. After seeing some of the stuff on Youtube that he was watching I decided that this wasn't right and had to do something. Usually it was just violence, nothing sexual. But I still don't want him watching that. I noticed that Netflix has kids section and I'm going to put Netflix on my parents Ipad and let him watch that instead. Hopefully I can remove or hide the Youtube app well enough.

For some reason, I can't watch this, despite it being released for FIRST members 17 hours ago.

Dan Olson did a great video on this, tracing the mechanics of these kinds of videos, the reasoning behind their bizarre content (child psychology is pretty crazy), as well as their origin.  He also notes that, barring outside influence, Youtube is unlikely to move against these videos, since it also benefits from the millions of views these channels enjoy, with the corresponding ad revenue.

James and Laurence hit it on the nose. 2 years ago (at the time my son was 3) we would let him watch you tube and he wanted to be in control.  We don't do tablet or phone video it is a at home thing so he was using my PC hooked up to my TV (which means we see what he watches). It started as Elsa and super hero's and all of a sudden it was live action people in spiderman and frozen cosplays getting pregnant, kidnapping and tieing each other up, lots of violence and glorifying those things.  We changed to Netflix kids, got an extension that does not let him go to you tube and there is no looking back for us. He has the control he wants, and after watching with him for a few months on and off I am secure letting him watch it alone, in the living room.

When I was a kid my family had a shelf of child-friendly VHS tapes and some DVDs of things like Disney movies and Star Wars. When I wanted to watch a movie, I could go to the shelf, pick something with fun looking box art, put it in the VCR and watch it. The only time my parents ever sat me down and picked for me were when they wanted to experience something with me, like the first time I watched A New Hope or The Matrix (a little later). A system like that scratches the same itch as selecting content on a tablet and cuts down on screen time, which is terrible for a developing mind. Using tablets as a crutch for parenting is a recipe for disaster to begin with.

Whenever I watch these videos it reminds me of this talk Dan Harmon gave about television.

    You can see it here.

It's a video where he explains why TV as a system is dying, while praising the internet for being different from it. I wonder at which point you could update this talk, where TV is replaced by YouTube, and The Internet is replaced by Ohn'z-Grulot'cjkThe Pale Thoughtmother or something.

Also, when Bruce read that text I closed my eyes and imagined him passionately speaking to an adoring crowd from a balcony in Guatamala.

Don't know how much this adds to the conversation, but working for Netflix directly my team have had to prepare a 'kids version' of certain shows. It comes a couple months after the initial 'Adult' version, and involves a re-edit and cleaning up of certain language. It's not too uncommon now.

Would you guys be willing to divide demo disk episodes up into two videos? I'd be fine with clicking on another video to go to the rule 34 segment if it helps you keep the lights on. Not sure if this would be practical: I only know the food, not the kitchen.

What I don't get is why Youtube can't take better care of the kids app by only allowing vetted MCNs. If there's money in it I'm sure something like Octonauts has official online content, but it seems even when MCNs are apparently checked by humans, these channels that seem to be created by bots seem to have still slipped by, even with the most obvious botlike names. I think Adam is right in what he said about hiring a team for the kids app, let regular youtube be age gated by algorithm if need be, but don't make a kids app if it's this atrocious at catching legitimately harmful content, but also flags legitimately educational content for talking about serious topics.

This is quite literally a temporary version of Dude Soup while they work on the clean, audio edited version for Youtube. This version will be deleted, and the other version will be uploaded. The only reason that we get this temporary version is because we get every video a day early as First Members, and they just streamed this episode today.
