That was a very thought-provoking podcast. I love it when this show does that.

    on Youtube manual viewing workforce:

I'm still not so sure it's as unreachable or unsustainable as y'all left off with. A lot of the main hurdles brought up could have some reasonable ways of overcoming them. Like people working from home instead of setting up entire offices, building tools to only look at the auto-flagged segments of videos rather than the videos' full lengths, and the fact that the work load should hypothetically scale with increased usage which would mean more money being generated to begin with to support the needed increase in the workforce (I don't know if that would actually pan out sustainably, but at the very least, it's not purely an increase in workload with no return on the investment). Anyways, it's obviously a very large discussion that we don't realistically have the numbers/statics to argue with informed decisions on, but yeah, I think there may yet be some creative solutions to make a version of this happen.

on the automation of video queues/suggestions for very young kids:

I really hadn't thought of just how dangerous that sort of thing could be before. I mean, we talk about raising our kids to know better, but the kinds of things y'all were showing were basically targeted to kids before they're capable of learning to know better. The bleach and knives things certainly come off as funny to older folks, but if automation screws up and slips that into a viewing queue or suggestion for really little kids that simply don't understand, it could easily put the idea in their head to something really dangerous. Worst case scenario, dead kids. In situations like that, letting the system take time to learn through experience simply isn't enough.

on motivations for AIs/Machines to kill humanity:

wow, that's actually a brilliant premise. If they've concluded/predicted that we're just going to kill ourselves, it makes a certain kind of sense for them to think to make the process more efficient. That's a much better motivation than the usual "humans are inferior or inefficient or evil" shtick that usually gets used. Nice.

I don't know how this lined up to where this is the second video of Funhaus's today where I have commented on foot fetishes. But when I was really young and on the internet I found a website about women's feet and shoe fetishes and stuff like that. Anyways long story short they had a whole subsection of shoes or people being muddy. I never understood it and I don't think I will ever understand it. Is it suppose to symbolize anything? If anything you can't see the persons shoes or feet so I don't understand the assocation. I don't know, it just deeply confused me as a kid and now as an adult its even more baffling.

They do screen the video before it uploads essentialy.  BECause the video not being monetized makes them no money. Once u become labeled non ad friendly. Your video will take 3-4 days to clear your video for ads.  And thats when your video gets majority of its views. THats why funhaus and lots of others private videos then unprivate them when they know its running ads.  That and to help them schedule a video to release certain day so it dont need 2b uploaded that day. it gets uploaded. Private it.  theN when make it public itll act as if its just been uploaded.   Problem is. Once its out . thatS when the automated system picks up a copyrighted song for 2 sconds. Or matches any audio to a copyrighted video in the database     Problem isnt that they need to screeen the video. its how long it takes them to do it.  Cant run a channel  on whenever YouTube gets back to you time

I had seen some headlines here and there about Elon Musk's war on AI and didn't think much of it.

Frankly AI is doing more things inside sites and devices I use than I previously thought and I'm sure most of the population is both unaware and uninterested. There's a reason why people know more about the new iphone X and the ad-pocolypse than CRISPR breakthroughs and AI. It's just not interesting until drama unfolds, and when it does the generation that reacts may be too used to AI in small doses to see it as an actual problem.

Social media is a good example of world reaching tech that was approached nonchalantly and rolled out into every site and device. But now we are seeing a wide range of big problems that don't fire off as major issues in the minds of a generation that grew up with it. It's simply an issue a company is dealing with, not an issue that effects them. I wonder if AI will be taken more seriously when it causes drama or simply news fodder until Kanye say some dumb shit again.

Your info was news to me Lawrence and I took note of it, very interesting stuff thanks slotting some soup time for it.

What if YouTube just created a site/program wherein you could just put your videos through there algorithms and see what gets flagged before you even upload it, allowing you to then re-edit or fight the demonetization before it even happens. And the videos that don't get flagged by the program can be safely uploaded knowing they aren't going to be demonetized. Now this could lead to people trying to game the system but YouTube could offer this at some kind of premium so you're paying to basically get your videos vetted beforehand.

(so to go into more depth my idea would basically be you put a video into the program, if there is any content caught by the algorithm it puts up a red flag, time stamp, and gives a mildly specific reason. The YouTuber could then literally just make minor alterations to the video to make it add friendly before uploading it. If there weren't any red flags then it gets a green go ahead. Maybe this program is just built into youtube itself so you only ever have to upload it once and you can basically just change the video from 'being vetted' to 'public'. This will help bigger content creates more then the little guys but it would be a more effective system.)

If the bot falgs a video, then it will flag something specific and give the operator a (for the lack of a better word) debug code. This debug code will be timestamped and be listed with a reason i.e. 'Racial slur at 02:51' This would mean any operator would only have to listen to the 10 seconds prior this time code to know whether the flag is authentic or not. Even in videos with multiple debug such as video games, the operator could sort between the flags, i.e. understands that all the weapon ones are not valid due to it being a video game, and just cut to all the extra ones like a sexually inappropriate flag for example. The only case where this wouldn't work is if the offense was contextual but thats a moot point anyway as a bot will miss a contextual issue and Youtube would have to rely upon community reporting to catch it.

Youtube could do something like what CSGO done with the overwatch which was other players watch the clips that got flagged for hack etc. and give their opionin on what they thought the case was. Youtube could give community members the power to watch the videos and give their verdict on the demontisation and give incentive to watch by giving people who give a non bias opinion perks etc.

Don't. Let. Young. Children. Near. The. Internet.

(or, just educate them about life)

Well, I say that, but I'm not a parent (not really planning on it; sounds like a tough job). But yeah, common sense seems to be getting lost more and more. The future is kind of fucked (but we already knew that) if we don't do anything about it. I'm not in favor of putting an age gate on the internet, or anything drastic of the sort, but maybe it's up to the parents to make sure that what their children are watching is decent, right? TV is at least monitored and screened by humans before broadcasting it, but it's unrealistic to think that the internet could do the same.

I don't have a solution, just dropping some thoughts.

Having worked with data science and machine learning for several years now, often it can be difficult for the creator of the machine learning algorithm to find out, why the algorithm has decided as did. It is easy for a human to look at a picture of a bird and classify it as a bird. For a computer however, you need large training sets of bird pictures, in different poses, colors, ... for the computer to be able to recognize birds. Even then you probably also need to train it more to differentiate between a bird and a plane. Simple for a human, difficult for a computer.

However, usually if you have more correctly labeled data, it is easier to train your models and what you as youtubers are doing is actually free work for a machine learning expert. I say usually because there is things like overfitting, where your algorithm can become over specialized and make errors, even though it knows more. By pointing out falsely labeled (demonetized) videos, the current model is improved through reinforcement learning. Basically, the expert gives the AI a reward for correctly labeled videos and punish it for falsely labeled videos.

As anyone working in this field can tell you, it is hard to obtain correctly labeled data. Having humans responsibly label data for you is the best way to get a good training set. Using AI to do this task will carry over the mistakes the first AI did to the secondary AI being trained with the data. This is why new services like Amazon Mechanical Turk are a good addition to training machine learning algorithms.

Always interesting to hear from you about the youtube algorithm results as that is not something that I usually come in contact with.

I really dislike Jame's attitude towards the human race. Yes there are terrible people out there and terrible things have happened and will happen but there's a lot more good out there than bad, it's just the bad stuff imprints on you and it's easier to remember. I could have 5 strangers hold open the door and think nothing of it and then 1 person doesn't hold the door open for me and it slams in my face, I'm obviously going to remember that one bad guy over the other 5 nice guys way more. Anyway as James can influence a lot of teenagers and maybe even younger I feel he should be a little less harsh on the awl human's we're not that bad  benson

It's interesting the idea that people avoid other people based on the fact that because a certain person has a certain viewpoint on the world that differs from their own. I'm definitely a liberal democrat who grew up in the Bay Area, but I have a roommate and friend who would probably be classified as a conservative republican. And we have really interesting and occasionally (admittedly grudgingly) enlightening conversations because we bring two different mindsets to the conversation, which helps both of us see a side that we normally may not have considered.

To discus the point you made at 35:00 or something I do happen to seek out articles (especially relating to politics) of differing views, specifically of both democrat (liberal) and Republican (conservative) parties, just do so I don't pigeon hole myself into seeing things through one perspective. I view the statement "Two sides to every story" as very important for understanding certain problems. However, I do usually end up disliking both sides because of how much they whine about each other.

edit: also I'm just a total fucking nihilist so take that as you will.
