In the UK when this first broke it was shown that the Government, Argos and Tesco had paid google for ads which ended up on extremist videos and sites this was followed by finding out a whole group of other companies had suffered the same thing, nothing to do with pewdiepie really just companies not wanting their brand to be hurt by google and taxpayer money not going to extremists. What I see as one of the problems here and one which is generally seen in the UK is that many social media sites and sites like google haven't made any major steps to counteract extremist activity where they could, one of the things for google and youtube is that whilst they are heads and shoulders above all alternatives in every regard this means they are expected by many to fix these issues early or prevent them because they should always remember there are alternatives, by not doing that it hurts brands trust in them. This isn't an attack on creators but the platform their on, which is hard but when taxpayer money goes to extremists for quite a long time its pretty big shit that needs to be talked about.

It's far from, "hard netting," but as a Twin Cities resident, I can totally attest to how accurate and hilarious that video is.

I'm up for an intellectual discussion as much as the next guy, but a lot of Dude Soup lately has been talking about single youtubers saying something 'controversial' that never matters a week later. Do other people enjoy these topics?

    • charlie_driver Charlie Driver!

yes and no. Really want some more video game related topics, however, if this is happening in the industry I'd rather dude soup be topical and up to date than just funny In true "rt" style.

I dislike the assertion that just because its a profession, Journalists are somehow automatically trustworthy. We've seen it time and time again where they use false or misleading information to generate views. This isn't 40-50 years ago when it really was journalists producing news. These groups are mega corporations that exist to make money.

Expecting them to behave any differently than Big Pharma, Comcast, or any other 'evil' corporation is naive. They exist to make money. They make money off the news they present. That leads to things like Rolling Stones false rape accusations. No one is above suspicion, especially when they're making a profit from your attention.

This can be as simple as making a list and saying "Number two will shock you!", or it can be as brazen as CNN correspondents providing debate questions to the DNC. It may factually be correct, but stilted in such a way as to support their bias, or lead readers to draw an alternative conclusion than what the facts actually say. Always research everything anyone is being paid to tell you.

Here's the fundamental difference: when WSJ made a video condemning PewDiePie, they used multiple clips completely out-of-context. In order to get those clips, they either A. didn't bother to look at the context leading up to the clips they used, which is lazy and dishonest OR B. they did bother to look at the context, but knowingly decided not to include the context, which is malevolent and dishonest. They also claimed that PewDiePie made "anti-Semitic posts" rather than "jokes that could be interpreted as anti-Semitic". When this was pointed out, instead of saying "We apologise for using clips out of context in order to portray PewDiePie in a certain way, however it still can be argued that PewDiePie's jokes have gone too far"  - which would have earned some respect points, they just said "We stand by our reporting". When H3H3 made a video condemning WSJ for photoshopping ads onto a video because the content creator didn't receive any ad revenue at the time of the article, but it was pointed out that actually the video was claimed and so the pictures could/probably are legit, what was H3H3's response? It wasn't "We stand by our reporting". They removed their video and immediately apologised. And yet people are saying "H3H3 have fucked up!". Do they not get any respect for immediately apologising and removing the video when they realised they could be wrong, or that they reported on it incorrectly? The WSJ haven't come close to this. They don't think they pushed a narrative or did anything in an underhanded manner. And it certainly raises a few eyebrows when the WSJ deny having a vendetta against Youtube creators, but then the next second go out of their way to shame brands into withdrawing ads from Youtube i.e. the primary source of income (and by shame I mean Jack Nicas tweeting the names of brands that have yet to withdraw ads). Also (and I mean this respectfully because you guys are smart and considerate) but, in my view, you frequently confuse impartiality with objectivity. In other words, whenever you hear yourselves coming down on one side of an issue - because the evidence leads you there - you back out and then present the opposing view as though it were of equal validity or merit, even if it isn't. Let's look at global warming for example; a person trying to be impartial would say "On one had we have scientists saying that climate change is happening, but then again on the other side we have far right conservatives saying that it isn't. So who knows! It's complicated" despite the fact that, objectively, there's far more evidence backing up the scientists than the far right conservatives. In other words, you don't have to be in the middle of every issue for the sake of it (and I'm not saying you always do that), and coming down hard on one side of an issue doesn't equate to being biased either. I still appreciate you guys trying to look at situations from different sides though.

I think Funhaus should have a show kind of like Hot Ones, but it's called "Stinky Ones," where the host and guest each get an onion and must eat the entire thing before the end of the interview. I really think it'd be a smash hit.

Could it be that WSJ did actually say the video was claimed, in the article that Ethan refused to read, because you had to pay to read it. Anyone on her have a WSJ subscription so they can clarify this, coz I certainly ain't paying for something I can get free everywhere else!

In the hard netting portion you guys briefly mentioned the two girls who stabbed their "friend" multiple times because they believed it would appease Slender Man.  I live in the city that tragedy occurred and remember the day it happened.  So far the girls have made multiple appeals to be tried as juveniles and have plead insanity do to actually believing Slender Man would have hurt their families if they did not make a sacrifice.  What are you thoughts on if the girls should be tried as adults or not?  I personally think that is was premeditated and they should be tried as adults but it's tough not to allow someone the chance of rehabilitation.

P.S.The victim has thankfully recovered and returned to school.

RT, your site is such a piece of shit. I've tried watching this podcast 7 times and it keeps stopping and saying "the media playback was aborted due to a corruption problem or because the media used features your browser doesn't support." https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/why-the-right-is-dominating-youtube

The WSJ is trying to take down youtube in an effort to take away from the right a platform where they're winning.

jk I don't really believe that. But it is an interesting thought.

During the whole pewdiepie thing, a reporter from Kotaku actually posted about, as someone working in video game journalism she has noticed that this tension between journalists and youtubers has been going on for  many years. It's not something new. She didn't outright come out and say it but reading between the lines one could take away from that she was implying journalists are simply jealous of the way youtubers are able to reach a large audience in a much easier manner than news sites.

In reality our host went down. Had to sound like I knew what I was talking about to get him to back off.

btw, the Minnesotan thing is and isn't a joke. It's actually how a lot people talk up here. That was on public broadcast in the late 80s. Probably my most posted link on reddit.

How to Talk Minnesotan is the best mock educational show ever. It's all based off a book by Howard Mohr, which itself was largely an adaptation of a number of skits he'd written while working on the radio show A Prairie Home Companion. After being written, it was developed into the infamous TV special produced by KTCA and a musical.

    Hard Nettin'

    LasagnaCat

Lawrence watch a few from 2008, then a few from 2017 just to get the absurdity. Then finish off with the videos:
    1 (800) 591-3274
Sex Survey Results (It's flippin' 5 hours!).

It's important to watch 'Sex Survey Results' to see the true brilliance and hard work involved with editing and placement (though you can skip around after investing like 30 or so minutes).

Then close to the last 10 minutes, it becomes completely Hard Nettin' that I can't fathom anything coming close to it.

I don't think WSJ will go after H3H3 for libel because it would open them up for lawsuits from Felix/PewDiePie for slander and defamation of character/lose of revenue etc.
