rugby is what i think about new zealand. Also to comment on the whole trash talk thing (great discussion btw). I think 100 percent that a slur or racial epithet is an easy go-to's when talking trash and i really appreciate it when a fighter, player etc just says something funny against another player. I dont think it's bad to trash talk in a game or match, and i find the best chirps are when they make you laugh. Rambling on  in racial/sterotypical fashion is just crude, and definitely should not be featured in a game like madden which rated Teen (13+ i think?). I can see more charged vocabulary in a Mortal Combat X tournament and that is to be expected from a 17+ game. While this is true, the comments from dubby did cross a line even for M rated content, and should not be tolerated. I love trash talk, but the amount of people who just swear or say slurs and then call it trash talk is unbearable and is a true scourge on this planet.

To be honest, trash talk has never really been a 'thing' around me my whole life, and I can't understand the appeal of it. I do get the satisfaction of seeing a trash-talker lose part, but it's not really worth it as far as I'm concerned - and it's generally easy to pick out competitors you like or hate anyway. Growing up I was a fan of soccer which can have some pretty extreme fans...but being from a low-population area of a small country, I was never exposed to them anyway. Overall there are some pretty large cultural norms here against anything like trash-talking - extreme humility and being folksy and genuine are raised up as the ideal and even though there were obviously assholes around, trash-talking wasn't really part of their repertoires.

Additionally, I basically grew up on single-player and local multiplayer only, and my last console was a SNES, so I was never exposed to the general scenes of archetypical trash-talk games like fighting games or Call of Duty or what-have-you. And my first foray into playing games multiplayer was with Starcraft 2, which probably has one of the most placid and polite competitive scenes around. There were definitely some personalities more forthright and honest than others, but at most it'd be things like 'fuck you' or 'he's just shit at the game' - not exactly advertiser-friendly, but nowhere near slurs or serious personal attacks. And that's about where my limit is too, pretty much. The former doesn't bother me at all and I'd hardly blanch at curses being used or someone blowing off steam like that. But I'd not have any interest in sticking around or being a part of a scene where the latter was common, much less popular. Whether it's a competitive scene, or the average player I meet queuing up a game myself. In that respect, it helps that all the games I've ever played online to any real extent are non-team games. Feels like it'd be a lot tougher to ignore/escape from in MOBAs or team shooters or the like where it's as likely if not more so to come from your own side.

Trash talk is a little more nuanced than discussed. The reason you don't think of Bird, MJ, or Kobe as big trash talkers is they were smart enough to keep that stuff mostly outside of the public view. Like Bruce was discussing they were trying to maintain there public figure the only probably being is that they still had major personalty conflicts as players, but still held a clean public image. So now you have guys who are just kinda mean anti-social people being role models for kids while there are trash talkers who are very public with their bad mouthing who are actually decent people. Obviously from a money and marketing perspective it's just about making it appeal to the broadest audience. I think that you do a disservice by obscuring a player's personalty because it doesn't teach kids to be good people only not to say bad things. In reference to Dubby though, he said some fucked up shit and I would not consider that within the realm of trash talk. Professional athletes have been suspended/let go for less than that.

I like how they all failed at crushing the fruit, and rather than admit the women might be stronger they were all defensive and went "It must be because they're more flexible"

    • LadyBeatelgeuse

From 47:30 until 51:00, James, Bruce, and Adam had nothing but compliments and praise for the women in the video for their strength. James mentioned how women have a higher pain threshold, but there was only one comment about flexibility that he immediately dismissed.

I think trash talk is a part of the sports world/ I love watching a player crumble under some good trash talk and it actually effects that player's game. A sportsman will do anything to win and if that means getting in a player's head and mentally tearing them apart with words then more power to ya.

Thats why the greats like magic johnson, reggie miller, michael jordan, allen iverson, larry bird, all the other great trash talkers in the game were so great cause not only could they get in somebody's head with words, but also back it up with there game.

Overall the trash talk compliments a player's game, as long as they can back it up.

Coming from the hockey community (which is pretty well-known in sports circles for being almost excessively foul-mouthed) it's pretty universally understood that trash talk is just gamesmanship to try and get your opponent to do something stupid.  I've been called pretty much every derogatory name under the sun and taken it with a laugh because of the creativeness of the insult, pleasure at the fact that I was succeeding in annoying someone, a further attempt to keep getting under their skin or some combo of the three in general.

For some reason though, vitriol casually thrown out in online gaming sessions still actually turns me off to the point I almost always preemptively mute any kind of chat function.  I'm honestly not sure why because all of it is language that I've had hurled directly at me before but like I said, it feels so much worse online.

Guess I'm just kind of curious if anyone else has had a similar experience to mine or thoughts on why that might be.

There is a huge difference between trash talking in sports and in video game culture. In sports it's generally adults who know that their trying to psych each other out. In video game culture it is 100% to insult one another cause they're pissed off that they got beat/killed etc.

I don't think the "capturing on consoles" feature James is talking about is the reason why shit talking has stopped. I think people would rather be in a party chat when playing, even if its just 2 out of 5 players on the team. Trash talk has been used in very military conflict in human history. Racial slurs against the German and Japanese were used constantly during WWII to the point that even Bugs Bunny did it. If you can dehumanize your opponent then you're not taking human lives but instead you're killing a monster or an animal. In hindsight its extremely racist yet at the time it was necessary to truly hate the thing you're fighting.

edit: delete this before but I guess id rather keep my thoughts out there. Sorry for it being so long tho, I really tried to shorten it.

I used to not like things like trash talking at all cause I could only perceive the act as mean spirited, but I grew to understand and appreciate what it brought to the scene.

Generally, trash talking is conidered part of the mindgame, like in-game taunts and mix-ups. At that point, if It works, then i say get that win and get that money.

I don't think that's the main reason in competetive play. For example, in a top 32 of a notable smash tourney, everyone knows everyone good as hell and almost no one about to get shook cause someone tells them they shit in any capacity after getting this far; they're more likely to be tilted by them actually playing like ass since they know money/rank is on the line and they're fucking it up for themselves. Trash talking still occurs here because everyone's here for it. They want that underdog story of beating the dude who was telling them they couldn't since they came to prove themselves. If they're the ones talking smack, they wanna be the one that told this player that "he could not beat me, before and after he tried me" because they know they're hot shit themselves. After training for days/weeks/years, their competetive spirit is here ready and willing to show anyone talking smack that they need to shut THE ENTIRE fuck up.

That being said, I think the greatest thing about trash talking is that, behind the money and noteriety of the scene, it's just old fashion smack talk between peers. Even if they aren't the closest of friends, there is still a level of kindship shared from being in the same community. People don't usually try to mess with people they don't know/don't recognize as someone with the same competetive interest. It's like what micheal said on the off topic Adam and Bruce were on, you don't talk shit about people you don't like/respect. In that sense, it's like when you guys rib and poke fun at each other. Elyse, ill never forget who's dad is still gone after that... Savagery, but you and Adam are friends who still work together. Likewise, while people be talking shit in tourneys and on social media, they're the same group of people who hang out, train with each other, and trade tips and tricks to improve each other's game. It does go too far sometimes but usually it's all in good fun and strong spirit.

EDIT: If anyone wants to offer actual criticism of what was said rather than throwing up -noobs on it I'd appreciate it.

I have a few thoughts on the trash talk topic and related issues, and I would love to have some feedback.  I will not be using any of the language referenced, as it is clear that you guys are uncomfortable with it, and I respect that this is your space.  This is not meant to be an attack on you, or any kind of assertion that I know better than anyone else on the issue.  Rather, I would like to improve my own understanding and compassion through dialog as much as possible.  I know that none of you claim to be experts, but I have tremendous respect for your thoughtful and compassionate approach to many different subjects.

With all that out of the way, I am curious as to your precise reasoning for substituting the most offensive words/phrases when quoting the tweets in question.  I also feel incredibly uncomfortable around that language, but I will use exact quotes when speaking about a specific instance of its use.

My reasoning for doing this is the "Voldemort principle," which is essentially the idea that while of course it is unacceptable to use the word in a derogatory fashion (or with any intent to cause harm), that by skirting around it so reflexively, you actually maintain the power of the word indirectly.  It seems to me that there are tons of other highly offensive words and phrases that do not get routinely censored in the discussion of their use.  I think it's clear that the historical recency of slavery/unequal civil rights/ect. plays a role, but do you think there is some fundamental reason why "nathan" is treated this way in relation to other hurtful slurs?

Finally, I'd like to address the free speech issue.  I will always support the right of a company to apply their own rules of what is acceptable for those who represent their brand in some form.  James is right to point out that the specific phrase "free speech" traditionally refers to the ability to speak one's mind without governmental recourse, but I would like to argue for what I will call "open discourse."  In the past I have fallen into the trap of arguing for "free speech" in regards to a company's restrictions on the expression of its employees, which implies that their rights have been violated by the government.

In those cases, what I really mean is that I feel that a principle I appreciate (what I'll call "open discourse") has been violated, not a right.  In the Madden case, for example, I think it was totally right of EA to object to the tweets in question.  What bothers me is the growing trend of the deep dive into the entire history of an individual's online presence.  I see no reason why EA couldn't have had the come-to-Jesus meeting with him before assessing a fine, and perhaps setting up additional clear boundaries for him, such as requiring a public apology, before applying a fine.  $3000 just seems like an awfully large sum for some 5 year old tweets.

People are not static.  This case is a great example of that.  Unless his recent statements and apology are a cold and calculating lie, it seems that this ordeal has driven some personal growth on his part.  What bugs me about this is that it doesn't seem to seek to improve, but to punish, and any character growth is incidental.  EA has the right to act as they did, but these sort of stories add up in the collective unconscious.  This creates a chilling effect on open discourse across the board, where people feel the need to perform to meet some ethereal standard of morality.  Using "nathan" is an example of a clearly wrong action, but political and social views are constantly adapting and evolving, so it is reasonable for some people to avoid speaking publicly on any issue that isn't starkly black-and-white.

Sorry for the wall of text, and thank you if you made it this far.  I hope I haven't caused offense or been an asshole in some way I'm blind to.

Bruce pretty much answered your question in this video, they don't want a sound bite of them saying these things on the internet. While quoting the tweet verbatim is acceptable in this context, it only takes one person to cut it out of the video and post it without context.
After all it's been nearly FIVE years, yet people still give Adam shit for the quote "It's like Skyrim with guns".

Fighting games have managed to keep personality but have a respectable amount of filter the past few years. That's why I enjoy watching them more compared to the robots Adam described. I actually remember tweeting Adam when he was at Machinima about getting melee players on their competitive channel since it was taking off and he said he'd bring it up but nothing happened. In hindsight I actually think he did and nothing was done, years later when melee got popular Machinima did have player son for exhibition matches but the players didn't feel like going to them just to play matches for free again.

I think the reason idubbbz gets away with it is, People are getting bored of PCness, i mean look at Pewdiepie ever since he started acting like a Nazi people have loved him even more.

i really doubt they could pull a Pewdiepie and have a sign that said "death to all jews" or a idubbbz and say nigger. It's just the difference in viewer base, Idubbbz and pewdiepie are mainly followed by gen z, which are anti-PC/snowflake. and Funhaus has millennials.

I am born right on the edge of Gen Z and millennial, and it is amazing going out with my millennial friends and then my gen z, the contrast in beliefs and the way they talk is amazing.

My girlfriend said it the best i think "millennials vs Gen z is a simple case of Hugbox vs Hurtbox" and she as a 25 year old millennial i found that very interesting.

Any other gen z/millenial out there noticing a huge contrast between the two in your social lives? I am honestly curious.
