I might be thinking of the concept of crypto currency a little too simplistic, but I'm wondering if we will create a local wallet that is guarded by the same encrypted math as the companies that are holding our crypto currency. It's a wallet that you own, and are not held to the possible future fees by these crypto currency holding companies.

Going off of Adam's "I wanna talk to rich people" thing, there is a really interesting reddit thread where a guy who claimed to be somehow related to or brushing shoulders with the fabulously wealthy talked about how "socializing as a human" changes as you go up in income brackets (in the 1%).

The few really rich (non-billionaires) that I've met seemed to fit the mold he described, with the added aspect of them being very comfortable in working to make their company better over *everything* else... The power isn't what they care about - working is their own "game," so to speak.

Granted, none of these people were actual assholes. Some where scarily single-minded and didn't care about a lot of stuff (vacations are just to make more contacts, if you take one), but not "hookers and blow" assholes.

i don't claim to fully understand this at all, but wouldnt an untraceable currency actually be... terrible for a lot of the ways society functions? there's a reason you declare when you're bringing a large amount when you travel, it's so we can keep track of the money coming in and leaving the country. and what about being able to catch and convict criminals? i know a lot of people are paranoid about letting the government have too much information and want to be able to keep their privacy, but it seems to me there are real valid reasons why people should be able to be held accountable for what they're doing with money. (...sorry if they go over this later, i'm only at 27 minutes in)

Adam and James are completely correct though, the best way to win is to play the long game and invest in funds that track the market at the lowest possible cost. Compound interest will do the rest for you.

The thing about this whole situation that is interesting to me is the talk about people getting rich by investing in crypto. Their being rich (at this point) is measured in terms of USD, even though crypto is proposed as a competing form of currency. So their wealth is dependent on crypto actually winning out versus the dollar or whatever other form of traditional currency, or on them selling their crypto for another currency, which requires that the value of crypto versus the dollar stay high. I just think it will be interesting to see how the people who are using crypto as an investment to create wealth in terms of USD affects the future use/value of crypto as a currency, not as purely an investment.

  • kmasterc FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

only major counter point is if you stop treating cryptocurrency like a commodity and treat it like a currency, and then make an argument as to why it isn't stable for a currency that doesn't apply to the U.S. dollar; you have a point.

Okay sorry as an economics grad student and hopefully future PhD I just have to say off the back and I honestly don't mean to be mean or to personally insult anyone but Bruce shut the hell up you're an idiot and you are potentially doing A LOT of damage to people's lives. The blockchain technology is an amazing technology that has uses throughout modern society, like the list of its actual  potential is long and too complicated for me, but actual cryptocurrency is one of the biggest scams that has been invented in the 21st century, the fact that you must pay in order to use your piece of currency should be a giant red flag to anyone. Once again this is directed to Bruce but man you are an adult, you guys are pretty big youtube stars aka influencer, you have a lot of fans you are giving the wrong idea about crypto to. The way a bubble works is some financial asset is completely overvalued, there are actually bubbles that happen all the time its just you only hear about the big very wide affecting ones like the housing or tulips but even the beanie baby craze was technically a bubble, and because of that giant over valuation of the assets people invest more and more except that asset has no where near the actual value that people are attributing it. As the bubble continues to grow it starts to draw more and more people to invest in it and the next thing you know people have 2 or 3 liens on their houses just so they continue to invest in the asset then when it burst its not just directly affecting the "Bitcoin Market" its affecting the housing market, its affecting the labor market from the people who quit their jobs, its affect the consumption market because people just spent a lot of money on worthless goods, its affects the investment market because people just wasted a ton of capital on a worthless investment. The best way to stop bubbles is to recognize that something is in a bubble and to stop investing it in and to discourage people from investing it in and assisting people to divest from the asset. You're doing the exact opposite and I know it seems like what you are doing is harmless but in reality you are personally helping to wreck peoples lives and hurt the economy so please stop and you should also sell off all your coin and invest in it real assets.

    • castillotrain1 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

And to those who will argue that Bitcoin and cryptocurrency isn't a bubble, I'm sorry but youre wrong full stop. Its a currency that is constantly deflating, very rapidly; that has a real economic cost to simply use it; and that has a hard cap on the amount of it that can be actually made. All three of those listed reasons are the tl;dr of why it is not a currency, the tl;dr of why the coin base commodity market is in a bubble is simple, there is no real value behind it. A bitcoin is not a real usable monetary items and can't reliably be used as one so what is it's purpose then? You could argue that it could be used for simply processing transactions for international trade, so people in two different currency regions can trade, but we already have institutions for that. They're called banks and they are far more efficient at doing that than any cryptocoins right now. So the underlying asset of this commodity market is expanding at an astronomical rate is worthless. Boom bubble but even more dangerously boom bubble that is currently really only inciting a single generation so when it bursts the effects that can usually be spread against an entire population will directly affect one specific age gap. Not to go full Nostradamus but if this situation isn't properly contained it could have long lasting effects on the future American and global economy. Young people are supposed to be very cash rich but if we lose all of that in the crypto bubble then well who knows what might happen.

This is a synthesis of what I got from the podcast.  I am not an expert, I got C in ECON 101, so castillotrain1 definitely is more knowledgable on all of this.

In Bruce's defense.  He repeatedly acknowledges that the current state of cryptocurrency is in a bubble and if you want to get involved, then you should do plenty of research and only use money you can afford to lose.

My take away was their attitude toward cryptocurrency is there is a future for it, but it will not be what we currently have because of the environment is volatile and will most likely go under heavy regulation once the bubble bursts.  So in it's current state, investment is currently on par with gambling on human behavior as opposed to odds based gambling in a casino.

I find this all fascinating and terrifying at the same time because it does seem to have potential to shake the financial world up.  I personally take the stance that Adam has, that the best investments are the long-term ones for retirement.

This podcast was designed to point out how old, dumb, and simple I am. I got a bank account because I got a job that required me to do so to receive a paycheck. I setup a checking account that gave me a debit card, and the account was designed to never apply fees so long as I always had steady income depositing into it (a bi weekly paycheck). I get paid and apply that to bills and a mortgage. I don't invest money because I don't have money set aside for that. What things am I not doing in my life that should make me hate banks?

P.S. I believe my problem is that I'm lower middle class/ high class poor? Economics is exciting and not a thing I learned about in western Kentucky public schools. I did learn how to write and balance checkbooks, though. I said, "I know how to write and balance a checkbook!" Check. Book. It's a thing where you have to remember to write in cursive for some reason... I said, "Cursive. Writing!" And now I've passed away from being so old.

If anyone watching is interested in crypto, or if you're interested in particular Bruce, I'd recommend investing in ICON (ICX), It is currently an ethereum based token, but it is about to launch their mainnet platform on the 24th of January which should boost its value by a lot. The mainnet launch also marks their opening onto the Korean market, where it has numerous partnerships, including the Korean government itself. I've already made ~100x my investment when i bought in at the ICO in september 2017, and this should be another huge jump in value, so if you can get into it, I'd certainly recommend it to make pretty serious returns over the next month, or if you want to get super rich over the next year. Of course I'd recommend you look into it yourself, and have a look at the whitepaper on their website. But basically, if you get in soon, whether for short term or long term, I'm confident you'll be making a very neat profit.

    EDIT:

At the ICO, the value was $0.11 USD

As of writing this the value is $12 USD, come back in 2/3 weeks and compare it again.

Love that the guys tried to have a deep dive into blockchain and crypto, but there are a lot of fundamental misunderstandings on their part. This is the precursor to automation of every industry/service and transfer of value. When things become trustless, everyone has equal access to monetary value. There is no need to trust in a centralised institution like a bank. And thus there is no need to pay fees to a bank to subsidise that bank's employee incomes/overheads. The only fees involved in blockchain is the 'gas' involved in transmitting the transactions. Some blockchains right now have transaction fees of 2c for a $10,000 transfer. Any business that involves payments will be affected by blockchain at the very least. So no need to pay bank tellers/back office workers/administrators because everything is automated and secure.

Then the further expansion of blockchain is the incentivisation of decentralisation in many other areas of life. It could be renting out the storage space on your computer that you're not using, or its processing power etc. And all are incentivised by paying you in a trustless (and therefore without any middleman taking fees), automated and secure way. Imagine a small passive income being earned from just having a computer connected to the internet.

RE: the 'bubble', absolutely the speculative value of these coins is out of proportion for the most part, but some will thrive because they are the basis for the future in the same way email, SSL, HTTP and other protocols have allowed the internet to thrive. Its just a matter of really researching the technology and its implications. Blockchain will change the world. Look at the 'unbanked' in the developing world. Having a smartphone will replace the need for a bank account or the scam that is western union. Remittances to family members across the world with almost zero fees, rather than a 8-10% handling fee.

RE: Bitcoin, it was the original and for many years the best, but it had no and continues to have no concrete development to keep up with the exponential rise in the amount of bitcoin holders in the last couple of years. This has rendered the bitcoin system useless as a currency because the transaction time (up to hours when congested), and transaction fees ($50 to send $500) are worse than traditional banking. Bitcoin now is only a store of value and has no uses that other systems have not improved upon, i.e. it only possesses the value society wants to attach to it. And therefore it is very fragile. A Bitcoin node (i.e. a person holding a copy of the ledger on their computer) right now is in the 10's of GB. It will come to a point where only an industrial server bank could run as a node. And that is obviously against every conception of de-centralisation.

Bitcoin is not THE blockhain now. It is not the leader in the space, its the relic. Do not judge the technology as a whole by the manipulation, speculation or centralisation of Bitcoin.

RE: voting, this is definitely part of the future. Brazil has already adopted blockchain as its new voting system in the future. This is because the blockchain is immutable.  It can only be manipulated if 51% of all of the users decided to manipulate it. Manipulation itself would need to be synchronised hacking of the system by all of those users at the same time. And thus the more users a blockchain has the more secure it becomes. Immutability is the core concept to blockchain and the reason mining (and in newer blockchains 'staking') is part of the system. Both are done to incentivise the user to be 'honest' because the cost to, for instance, buy 51% of all of those type of coins to hack them, would be much less profitable than to buy 5% and/or mine 2% normally.

I also urge everyone to look at the pilot project the UN World Food Programme used in Syrian refugee camps using Ethereum to give them secure food vouchers which were tied to their identities and thus eliminate corruption or a black market of selling vouchers.

P.S its Tronix not TRON, and its likely a scam.

The problem you guys talk about is capitalism. We want more things that make us feel better in our daily lives. Capitalism provides us with everything a human mind can think of as long as the person in charge of the capital sacrifices whatever morale value they have. We just go along because it makes our lives better, we are all at fault, don't blame just yourself or a specific class/race/whatever criteria you feel deserves most of the blame. We all go for what makes us feel better.

i made like 600 bucks from btc,eth so I'm an authority on the matter obv; if you wanna invest in something long term, look for cryptos that aren't blockchain based (eg, IOTA-quantum proof, infinite scale, no fees, iot compatible for microtransactions)

also if you're gonna invest, make sure you have a way to remove the money and not just buy into it.. local btc exchanges connected to your bank account work well; treat it like gambling, only put in money you can afford to loose
