I really identified with what Omar was saying on this one as I'm pretty much at the exact same place. The whole dating app/website thing just feels so forced to me, because like he mentioned, I think the best relationships are the ones that happen organically. However, that being said, as someone with a full time job who isn't in school anymore and is also quite introverted (not necessarily shy), going out and meeting people in that way seems impossible.

But also, on top of the desire to meet someone in a more organic way eg. at a bar or event, it also gives you an opportunity to see them interact with other people which is something that was brought up near the end of the podcast. Someone's online dating profile is such an isolated little bubble of who they are as a person, and even meeting them one-on-one for a date is not really indicative of who they are in a social situation.

I don't know if this would be helpful for anyone here, but a small suggestion from a woman since we didn't get that perspective: don't try so hard. Don't pretend to be cool/funny/outgoing if you aren't, because a) we can tell, and b) you can't keep that up forever. Just be honest; if you're nervous or shy, say so! It definitely puts me at ease because then I know you're being authentic.

New York City has a population of 8.5 million living within just 300 square miles, but it can still be incredibly lonely and difficult to meet new people, especially on apps like Tinder. The downside is that by virtue of having (literally) hundreds of thousands of profiles to flip through, it’s easy to become a little pickier and more apt to reject people, constantly thinking you can just find someone better… But that can definitely backfire and make you miss out on a person that you might have really connected with.

On a personal level, even though life here is always go-go-go, I’ve been trying to slow down a bit and give others more of a chance lately.

i enjoyed the episode but i have 2 criticisms, which maybe it was just me that didnt understand but here it is.

    1. they bring up the aziz ansari story but never explained it and i kept waiting for the details but it never came. given it was easy to find but it just seems like the story should have been explained since it was spoken about on the podcast even if a brief explanation.

2 i just wonder what about the new contender to hard netting was was qualified it to be a contender? i didnt really understand what made it hard netting and what made it greater than the cat piano. Can anyone explain this to me?

Thank you for this episode guys. My relationship just ended after three years and most of the reason why are exactly the one you talked about. Communication, being happy with yourself before trying to find happiness in someone else. I am already dealing with all the things that start to go around in your head after a breakup and listening to this helped. Since there is much noise around right now all over the world about how media personalities use their position to share negative ideas, I always found your way of just speaking about stuff in a rational way in some way inspiring. And if you want to find stuff for hard netting, look for Italian you tubers or even just look at Italian websites. We net hard here.

I suspect it's how he managed to cope with it, or tries to. Lawrence is, as far as I can tell, the type of person who acquires as much knowledge about a subject or activity that he otherwise struggles or has struggled with, in order to attempt to understand and then overcome the difficulty. I feel decently sure of this in part because it's exactly what I do, too.

Omar, your story is almost exactly like mine.  Like everything.  Except I didn't come out with an epic beard.  Not that this is edifying in any way, but there definitely is a sort of "diminishing return" once you hit a certain age in this generation without checking some of the critical boxes.  I do fear what this looks like in 5 more years.

Very interesting insights though, thoroughly enjoyed the discussion (as always), and James hit the nail on the head with the post article reflection taking stock of past experiences, very sobering moment!

it's nice to hear you guys chat about this. there's no right way to jump into the dating world, the only thing you can do is be yourself. i'm still having a hard time getting back into it because of my own personal problems, but i'm hoping to better myself and be more confident with who i am before i try to share that with someone else.

    lovely as always, gentlemen. <3

New year, new Funhaus is smashing it!

Last two podcasts have been unreal. It's nice to see people who are looked up to provide a healthy well rounded argument while being relatively unbiased and, more importantly, respectful to what's scene as such a divisive topic, especially surrounding the #timesup, #metoo juxtaposed against the #notallmen movements.

    Well done Funhaus!

I'm not where I wanna be and a group of people who ideologically I aspire to be like, sharing their views and basically saying: "just take it one step at a time" and "force yourself to interact or at least be willing to", is what I needed to hear right now.

Hey Lawrence, it was really cool to hear you like Little Shop! I'm in my school's production this spring and I totally agree with the stuff you say about Seymour. The cast has talked about it and we agree, Seymour is a pretty bad guy if you look at things objectively. He murders people to feed his plant and make more money. Just because he's this "nice guy" who's had bad luck his whole life doesn't condone what he does. Great episode :)

It's important to recognise how destructive media has been to our generation. There is now a huge focus on sex over relationships and creating a family. Birthrates all across america and europe are dangerously low. Boys are lacking strong male role models in their real lives, and so we attempt to find role models in media. These men aren't real and the people writing these male characters are probably socially inept too.

We need to go back to more secure traditional family values. Emphasise the importance of sex as more than just a throw away hobby or some medal. Emphasise the importance of creating the best possible version of you before you try and model yourself around other peoples wants and needs.

You cant take the internet and media away from children 100%, but when we all become parents we need to try and mute the negative effects more efficiently than our parents did. (they didn't know what the media industries were capable of so they aren't entirely to blame)

I hate this comment. It doesn't make sense. What you're saying is that media is ruining the mystery and wonder of sex. Those two things are not related. You're letting your own insecurities dictate things that you think are what is wrong with the rest of he world. Hook-up culture has always been a thing. Prostitutes have always been a thing. Sex has always been something that people think is taboo and it's not. You saying that we need to go back to a time when sex was sacred and family values mattered is a step backwards. The time that people think of when they think of family values are times when men beat their wives because their whole marriage was based off how the man was attracted to the woman and the woman didn't have a say. Adam says it perfectly with his Don Draper comment. People think that he's cool cause he looks like a bad ass and does what he wants but in reality he is a minority of the population that doesn't act like that. You're perception of "traditional family values" is still made up by a random person or group of people who deem what behavior is moral or correct. It's the exact same thing as some shitty writer in a room writing what he thinks a man's man would be. It's completely subjective and it's always evolving.

Just got done with a "Getting" Relationship that lasted 2 years. I'm sitting here trying to hold myself together. I love the self esteem bucket. I am in a rebuilding place. Y'all are great. This Dude Soup topic really hit home for me. Being 23 and a freshman in college has really put a damper on meeting someone even close to my age and maturity level that I really click with. Not to say i'm this stoic, masculine persona (see LARP photo avatar). I am goofy and all over the place. I do go to events and branch out and I think a lot of what i try to achieve is because I want it but I also want someone to notice me. I used basically every dating app from OKcupid to Tinder from Christian Mingle to POF. I went on a total of 2 dates over a 6 year span. It has really hit me harder than anything else because I have dated before, even consistently, but its that question that hits me over the head: "why doesn't anyone want anything to do with me romantically?" It's sort of this grey area. Especially when no one knows what they're doing and you can't find that Complex thing that you fall for, or even if you how to match up. That's me though.

You have to also drill in your head that sometimes there just isn't a connection either. The feeling of wanting someone to acknowledged you is something I know all to well since it gets really hard to do it for yourself since you always have that voice in the back of your head that maybe you are the problem. Then that insecurity gets projected when you don't think it does. It may sound cliche but some people can end up getting that hint when you don't feel it.

Also I also used a lot of dating apps like OKCupid, Tinder, and Match.com. It may seem like a good thing and I am sure it works for a lot of people. They even advertise it as something trendy and good for people with no time and such. BUT! online dating can also be confidence breaking, especially if you have low self-esteem. It can give you that nagging feeling that you are nothing when you don't get hits or messages then the site will try to sell you a package to get views. It is starting to sound more like scams for people desperate for dates.

But you are 23, you have a lot of your life ahead of you to worry too much right now. Being a freshman in college, you will have chances to meet a whole slew of people.

You'll hit 29, look back, and you'll notice that people actually did hit on you but you were young and dumb and didn't notice. You'll learn and mature. Or just date women in their 40s that own their own homes. Probably the most fun I had as a 23 year old.

I'm still not sure how this new schedule works for the dudesoup podcasts.

Most other podcasts on RT work like Stream Day A, upload the stream the next day, upload the post show the day after that (with a one day delay for non-first members). Funhaus was different in that they uploaded both the podcast and post show the day they filmed it, then a cleaner version the next day (with the same one day delay for non-first members).

With the new schedule it seemed they filmed it on monday (during the cockblock), the videos only showed up on the schedule today  (wednesday. Not on the main page), it's still the temporary stream version, assuming they will upload the cleaner version tomorrow (thurday) and then to youtube the day after that (friday).

Is this the norm or is stuff just kinda fucked because of Funhaus live? Other than the podcast everything else has been moving pretty smoothly content wise.

@JarrydBracke Got it. But would them no longer uploading the stream version the day they film it, mean that first members no longer get the clean version of the stream early and have to wait for it to go up on youtube?

@Swible I couldn't tell you, I mean they do need time to edit still, but listening to the stream version never bothers me

Well you obviously don't have to wait for it to go up on YouTube, since you're watching it here, but it seems like you might not get the "clean" version of the stream at all. You just get the YT version on-time, and the YT version is delayed a day. I haven't been First for long, but based on what Swible said, it sounds like this is how it already worked aside from getting the clean version of the stream.
