I love that there's a single non-cinema related thumbnail on the page at 29:55, and it's AI Kizuna. Adam's been watching her non-stop in secret ever since she was on Hard Nettin' and now she just shows up in all of his search results no matter what. Wait, that must be why he was so against her; he was trying to deflect away from the fact that he's secretly her biggest fan! Sorry Adam, cat's out of the bag.

Missed a segue opportunity: Know what monster movies might make you do? Shit your pants. Then you need new ones. Thanks to Mack Weldon for sponsoring this podcast!

As they said, Universal already essentially had an interconnected universe decades ago. They're just doing the exact same thing again, but instead are trying to compete with the biggest film franchise of the modern era, with a genre that audiences have long since lost interest in, using a business model that's failed them in the past which we're also getting sick of, by rebooting films they already rebooted little over a decade ago. I seriously doubt it's going to work, but I hope it does.

Everyone keeps saying "people won't go see a new franchise." Look at the biggest movies of last year. Moonlight. La La Land. Arrival. Manchester. Get Out and Split are likely going to be big ones this year. Not to mention Marvel and Star Wars are planning to slow down after 2020 and DC likely won't last much longer. The franchises we know are winding down and I think most of us are getting sick of the average superhero movie. Guardians plays on nostalgia. Deadpool is a comedy. Logan is a western. Wonder Woman is a period piece and war film. The most acclaimed superhero films are the ones that mix genres, which to me sounds like audiences are sick of the average present-day, high-action superhero movie.

I'm not saying the genre is dying, but that it might be winding down and might appear bigger than it is, and the whole interconnected universe thing may not be as common in the future as it is now. Which isn't surprising, since it's based on the comic book business model and can't be adapted quite as well to monster movies and space operas, much less other franchises that haven't even tried it yet. The Cinematic Universe model might not be as flexible as studios wish it was, and Marvel might be the only one to do it this successfully BECAUSE it's so closely tied to their source material.

Lon Chaney as the phantom of the opera is the single scariest thing I have ever known. seeing it on Muppet babies when i was very young probably set the pace for the rest of my existence being afraid of masks. and babies

Could you not speak so authoritatively about someone's career and contributions if you won't even pronounce his name right?

Both Lon Chaney Sr. and Jr's last names are pronounced "Chain E". It's especially frustrating when James pronounces it correctly several times and Elyse still doesn't pick up on it.

Sorry, it's just a personal pet peeve of mine and I know it's not a huge deal, but still. Loved the podcast otherwise, great discussion as always.

Maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I really enjoyed the 1999 Mummy (and yeah the sequels were kind of garbage). The acting and the plot were pretty solid, Rachel Weisz was excellent and it had just the right balance between creepiness and action for me with the scarabs crawling under people's skin and the Mummy remaking himself from the cursed men's bodies (like the poor guy that temporarily escapes with no eyes and tongue).

In terms of the new mummy film, I'll wait for the reviews to see if it's worth watching but personally I don't like Tom Cruise very much as an actor so him being in a film isn't going to make me want to see it.

I don't really like films, I don't watch a lot of films, it's not a medium that I really get, but watching FunHaus talk about films is bizarrely compelling. I like Grosse Pointe Blank, that's your level for how much I know about films.

I feel like whenever someone says the fights from BVS were super good they're talking about the one fight with Batman in the warehouse towards the climax of the movie. That fight was the ONLY good fight in the movie. There's that and then the fucking beam-fight with doomsday at the end  mask

This is one of the best episodes of the movie podcast. Talking about the latest somewhat likeable Marvel movie is pretty boring to me because you can get that all over youtube. This, however, is a discussion you're not likely to find many other places.

In regards to if the monsters are public domain: Universal owns the interpretations of the monsters. Much like Disney owns a black haired Snow White in a blue dress. Frankenstein's monster is public domain, but Frankeinstein's monster with green skin, bolts in his neck, a flat top and a big forehead is owned by Universal because that was not in the original novel. So if he were to appear like that in Scooby Doo it would have to be cleared with them. I also think Universal argued that the original creators were the make up artists and not the directors, thus extending the length of their copyright, but I could be wrong.

What's everyone's obsession with the Rock? Maybe it's because I was never a huge fan and wasn't that big into wrestling but the only Rock movies I like are pretty much Fast & Furious. But that's just because they're silly and he has awful one-liners, I don't know why but he's never been a huge selling point for any movie for me. He could never be in another movie and I probably wouldn't notice or care. All that said, I may just be salty ever since he trashed my boy Vin.

    Media/movie noobie here,

Is the Invisible Man that "Ed Solomon wrote" (Elyse at 22:44) different than the book that H.G. Wells wrote? If they are different, is this Invisible Man a good guy or a bad guy?
