I know I'm way the hell late to the discussion, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Anywho, the D&D movie you guys described that bounces back and forth between the game world and the real world already exists and its called "The Gamers: Dorkness Rising."

You can find it for free on youtube on the Dead Gentleman Productions channel. If you type Dorkness into the channel search bar you'll find the official playlist of the series cut up into episodes.

You can also find the whole movie in one block, but its better to support the creators on their channel.

Another series that tackles the whole drama and stories of the characters behind the characters is "Night of the Zombie King." Its the story of a group of friends that, years after their role playing group disbands, finally get back together to beat that campaign that they never finished.

I'll admit that this is one that I haven't seen due to time constraints, but I have it one good authority (the happyjacks kind) that its well written and well acted.

Lawrence makes a good point about the anachronistic feeling in movies. Funny for me it either takes me out of the movie if done poorly or if done well it enhances the movie letting you just kind of pick the time of your choosing. Napoleon Dynamite comes to mind as a good one!

Can anyone recommend a slice of life anime for me? I've never been an anime consumer but would like a slice of life and grounded story to watch in that realm.

      Best way to give you a recommendation is to get a list of interests. Like;

do you want some aspects of the fantastical and weird,

do want some aspects of the futuristic and scientific,

do you want something set in the modern mundane world of today,

do you want drama or do you want comedy,

do you want to cry, or laugh, or both,

do you want to work through some personal demons by watching someone else do it as well,

do you want a varied cast of gender or do you want a more centralized cast based on one gender,

      so on so forth.

The more info you give us the better the recommendation we can give you.

Hey guys, massively in love with the stuff you put out, and I'm not often one to comment on stuff, but the script page Manganiello tweeted out was for "Dragons of Autumn Twilight", a book series By Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman. It is its own self-contained story rooted in a high fantasy world based on Dungeons and Dragons (and published buy Wizards of the Coast). So while I definitely understand the desire to have it be similar to "Princess Bride" and other stories in a framework like that, this is a script based on an extensive series with its own unique characters.

P.S. If you are looking for a good/terrible time, check out the animated film of the same name, starring both Lucy Lawless AND Kiefer Sutherland, released in 2008.

So a few comments about this. The way Adam felt about Invader Zim and not having anyone to talk about with it is RT for me. At least off the internet. Ed, Edd, and Eddy is awesome and they got a great film to send the show off. I loved their use of music like in old Tom and Jerry cartoons. Also totally forgot that Joe Magnella was Flash Thompson, that's pretty funny. Also Power Rangers movie felt pretty generic to me. The acting was good, but the plot and characters didn't really stand out to me.

During my college years, I did a lot of hanging-out around the MCA art-school community in Memphis.

The collecting of comics(specifically TPBs) was a big thing among them, to use for art reference, ...anywho...

That was when I was first exposed to JTHM....been a fan ever since.  =)

Invader Zim was always weird for me, I dunno if I was too young (i guess I was only 9 or 10 when it came out) but it scared the hell out of me. Especially the episode where he had the parent teacher conference with robot parents??? eugh. then when it came out on nicktoons in 06 and I was 14, i remember liking some episodes, but the humor seemed suuuuper "random" which I'd been shamed out of at that point.

Also I'm glad James and Elyse liked Your Name! as a PSA to all: if you can, see it subbed. In the dub they even dub the songs which is absolutely bizarre.

    • AntacidWheat1

I loved the random humour of Invader Zim, though it was probably just 15 yr old stoned me lol I'll have to try it again and I don't think they only dubbed the songs, but replaced them (I could be very wrong about that)

    • ox-horns FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Well I guess that depends on your definition of dubbed! RADWIMPS wrote the english versions themselves. Hearing a song that is meant to be in Japanese and sung LIKE a Japanese song, but with English lyrics, sounds really super weird.

Lawrence I would say that the word your looking for that refers to filmmakers mixing togther things from different time periods might be "pastiche". Its a term I've heard that has to do with the post modern approach and its a combination of various elements that, when used well, for something like the aesthetics of a film can give it a nonspecific and timeless quality. Films like Blade Runner and Star Wars do this for a vague futuristic look and films like Tarentino's Resovoir Dogs use it for more of a timless aesthetic

Yeah I agree with Lawrence. Everything except the action was decent or good in Power Rangers (teen drama was cheesy, but well acted and well written). The bad action was mitigated by nostalgia probably. The one triple kick and Power Rangers theme probably made up for it for a lot of people, including me admittedly. All in all, enjoyable movie.
