This week the whole gang is back to review the new horror film nobody is talking about. Also nobody's seen it. Or heard of it. Or cares that they haven't seen it or heard of it. Anyway, it's called "Friend Request" and it's about Facebook, and ghosts, and maybe cyborg hornets or something. Enjoy.

At the mention of Sinister, I thought I'd say that the first one was actually a cool movie that didn't rely on jumpscares and more just the fact that it was eerie/creepy. The second one was just full on jumpscares.

If you do end up taking horror movie recommendations, I'd suggest 2007's The Orphanage (El Orfanato). It's entirely in Spanish, but they subtitle it well. Executive Produced by Guillermo Del Toro, who was also supposed to helm a American remake that never happened.

I like the new ad reads. I understand that you guys have to play it safe with those, but it'd be cool if you could put your own spin on the little 'commercials' in the middle of the episode. Like the way Game Grumps do them. I remember Adam saying the show wasn't doing so well a while ago, so this looks like a step in the right direction. Congrats on going weekly!

Might I suggest the 1998 classic, John Carpenter's Vampires? On one hand, wonderful directing from John Carpenter, on the other... Well James Woods and the red-headed step child of the Baldwin's: Daniel Baldwin. Oh! And Sheryl Lee aka Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks. It's available on Hulu as is The Blob! (from 1988).

    Great show as always!

I tend to really like horror movies where the most horrific things aren't really the monsters or supernatural, but as @JustifiedTB mentioned, human nature. Generally I guess sci-fi/horror accomplishes this the best.

So much of the horror genre suffers too much from the same "scare" conventions of either the previously mentioned "scare cues" with sound and jump scares without having anything genuinely scary happen, or showing too much/over-explaining and dumbing down for the audience which just tends to create bigger plot holes than if they didn't attempt to do so, since most of the time the key to an enjoyable sci-fi/horror is suspension of disbelief and leaving some things unknown.

A couple moves I can think of for movies that flip those expectations or generally defy that structure and do something different would be not only Cabin in the Woods but also The Mist. Basically anything that shows how the hubris of humanity attempting to harness or leash powers that (either purposefully or accidentally) ultimately cause chaos and destruction (the "Jurassic Park"s of the horror genre, if Jurassic Park isn't quite horror enough - I guess more like Resident Evil in that premise), and how Everyday Movie Protagonist deals with the situation. And the big "horrific" reveals are impactful and visual, often bittersweet or ironic, and not simply a tedious expositional dialogue scene about some lore or mystical trope. (Show, don't tell.) Let the Right One In is also a very good example of doing a "monster" movie in a more muted yet terrifying (vs. jump scare) human-focused way. Another interesting but somewhat obscure film is the sci-fi/horror/romance Spring (2014). It's kinda cool because it doesn't fit firmly into one category, and it's a story I haven't seen done to death the way others have been. Split also did a few interesting things with a "monster" story despite maybe not being traditional horror but rather a hybrid with the superhero/villain genre. Those would be my suggestions for possible filmhaus podcasts, none are perfect and they are all worthy of critique, but I think they're worth a watch by anyone who hasn't seen them,

I've seen this film talked about here and on Cinema Snob's Midnight Screenings (he hated it too). Am never watching this film but listening to people who suffered through it is funny. (But why the hell did anyone watch this terrible looking mess?)

Please talk about CABIN IN THE WOODS! It's wonderful, and an incisive commentary on human nature and horror movies in general.

I love that Adam watches some of the same youtube channels that I do.  I love YMS, and I'm fairly certain that I've heard him talk about Red Letter Media in the past.  Those are my two favorite movie reviewers, and Filmhaus is now my third favorite. <3

I don't know if I would consider Conjuring a jump scare movie. Maybe just personal preference, but I thought it was a well executed horror movie that didn't solely rely on cheap scares.

"It's laugh track for horror" god that's so accurate lol.

I'm a pretty big horror film fan so I've watched... a lot of crap. And I absolutely agree with everything you guys said about this one. It's just another cookie cutter jump scare spookyfest churned out by Blumhouse and while it's fine to just throw on if you have nothing better to watch, I'm getting pretty tired of this style.I do think jump scares can be done well but when you can't make a movie "scary" without them, you have a problem.

A suggestion for October horror films (LOVE this idea btw): if you feel slightly more ambitious, it would be really really cool if you watched a film AND it's godawful sequel and maybe discuss what went wrong? Ex. Blair Witch vs. Blair Witch: Book of Shadows, or The Ring vs. Rings.

Here's the problem with the premise. When you're in college, yes you do still sue facebook, but it's no one gives a shit about how many friends you have, you pretty much add everyone you have to do an assignment with to send them one message and then wonder who they are a year later. And no one is the most popular girl in college, there are thousands of people and none of them know who you are.

This feels very much in the realm of teenage drama that should have been written about highschoolers which is probably the only audience that went to see it. I'm curious if there was nudity for them to use characters over 18.
