Golden Globes and the Academy Awards to me one big circle jerk of hollywood and also an excuse for actors/actresses to throw out their half baked "social justice cause" theories. I would actually rather spend time watching one the movies they are talking about than watching that shallow and pretentious ego fest.

My personal pick for an overlooked movie of 2017 would be "Dave Made A Maze".  Very imaginative film with some of my favorite set design I've seen in a movie.

This year I discovered Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency because it got cancelled, and it is the weirdest, most intriguing and satisfying show I've seen. It's like a giant crazy puzzle that makes little to no sense for eight episodes and falls into place in the last two. That'd be my one recommendation.

To Brights credit there hasn't been anything like it (Hold on please reach the end of the sentence) that as looked as good, the next film with mythical aspect in a modern setting with a good plot, that looks half as good as Bright, will be awesome. Bright has wet my appetite for what might follow it... Spiritually.

I seem to be in the minority who found dunkirk to be handsdown one of the most boring films of the year. Terrible pacing, 40 minutes too long and unlikeable charecters. Also how do you make spitfire dogfights boring ? No idea but he managed it.

im a little bummed bruce hated the OA. i loved it. also that they didnt mention bladerunner. it had great reviews but had poor ticket sales. it was absolutely the best movie of the year imo.

edit: adam mentioned bladerunner in the last minute and i jumped out of my seat! thank you adam!

YES!  Logan Lucky was my Underdog Film of the Year and was astounding.  The performances from Adam Driver and Channing Tatum were dynamic and flowed so well together in this hodge-podge world of characters that they were seen as outcasts.

Shoutout to Bruce for recommending the Leftovers. I've seen it (3 Seasons), 3 times. It's amazing, I recommended to everyone who hasn't watch it.

Top 3 shows ever made for me, along with GOT and Breaking Bad. Season 2 of the Leftovers is probably the best season of television I've ever watched and has the best Tv episode I've ever watched (International assassin).

The Leftovers is the best show I've watched from the 10s. The spy episodes are amazing, the first one is one of the best episodes of TV I've ever watched. Also the homeward bound scene got me so emotional.

I totally understand James' disappointment with Bright, and I say that as someone who actually enjoyed it. Sure, the story was predictable, Will Smith plays Will Smith (which he does in every film he's in), and there was a lot of flaws and cliche bits, but I went into it expecting it to be absolute garbage (which it was) and I was thoroughly entertained by it.

I think the streaming release actually made this film better. If I had to drive to a theater with a bunch of friends, pay $15 for a ticket, pay another $10 for snacks, and sit through the movie with a bunch of people who will probably be annoyed through the whole thing, then I'd probably hate this movie as much as James does. The fact that I got to watch it on a service I already paid for while laying in bed in my undies while stuffing my face with a big tub of ice cream disarmed my criticisms and allowed me to actually enjoy it.

It's a big dumb movie with big dumb action sequences and a big dumb story, and I loved every bit of it.

The ending of The Leftovers is literally the show asking the audience if they buy the answers given to them, which I thought was a great way to end it.

I'm with Adam. Awards shows are theaters of Hollywood elitists jerking each other off over who was best at persuading the voters to pick their shows.

I disagree, especially in the case of the Oscars.

I completely understand that sentiment (Primarily with the golden globes, who have fewer than 100 voters, and few if any have had any major involvement the the film making process)

But in cases like the Oscars, with thousands of voters, it would be ridiculous to think that someone could cosy up to any significant amount of them.

As well as the fact that every Oscar voter is involved in the film making process themselves (Writers, actors, directors, documentations).

I have great respect for the Oscars. I see it as a community coming together in inward reflection, and deciding, not what they thought was good, but what they thought was the best,

Excited! I suggested this topic on Monday for filmhaus, although I’m sure they probably already had this idea in mind planned ahead. Just glad to hear another topic I’m actively interested in be discussed by my favorite group of middle aged bearded men and lady. Cheers!
