I started watching Funhaus because of RT...and more and more I'm finding it harder to leave. First you guys get Elyse (who is fast becoming my favorite, watch out boys) and now you're talking about Dark Tower. You know how to warm a girls heart.

I have to disagree about Half Life. Not about whether or not they're working on it right now, but the guys pretty much acted like Half Life 2 was some giant piece of shit flop. I've never felt like Funhaus has been out of touch until now.

I mean saying things like "it wasn't a massive disappointment" makes me feel like these guys know far less about about gaming audiences than I once thought.

I don't expect people to agree on what is "the greatest game ever", because it's entertainment. It's subjective. But at the same time, with these guys scoffing at Half Life 2 like it was just some mediocre garbage, it makes me feel like these guys are kind of video game hipsters. Like, because it gets recognized as being such a monumental game (not just from PC gamers), and they didn't care for it, they're trying to act like it was nothing. I just don't understand that attitude.

I mean sure, I didn't think Citizen Kane was all that great, but just because I didn't enjoy it and other people say it's "the greatest movie ever" doesn't mean that I'm going to act like it's completely mediocre and unimpressive in every way.

EDIT: Lawrence later says he loved it, but it still seems odd to me that they feel the need to try to convince everyone that: no, it WASN'T a that great of a game, and it didn't make an impression.

I also have to say, I think they are way off base with the idea that not only does Valve just not give a shit about Half-Life, but they would be fine selling it off to someone like Lucas did with Star Wars. Everything I've heard from Valve seems to suggest that they wouldn't do that. They would rather something not happen than sell it away. Like when they asked about a potential movie, and they basically said "the only way we would do that is if WE made the movie...and we aren't going to make a movie".

I guess what I'm saying is, I probably won't be convinced that the makers of the Half Life franchise have done a 180 and really couldn't care less about that franchise anymore without some quote from them. Funhaus keeps acting like Valve just hates being tied to Half Life, and want to get away from it, but it always feels like speculation. I know they said they've been to their offices and met people and all of that, but was something said there? I think they are focusing on what WASN'T said, but let's be honest: Valve doesn't seem eager to talk about Half Life 3 in any way, and it has always been like that. They were pretty much the same way with Episode 1 and 2 (we will release information when we're ready, and no amount of persistence will get you information before then). Radio silence seems to be the norm on Half Life in general.

I don't know. I guess, to me, it seems like Valve is a very special developer. And I know how I sound, but I'm serious. They are clearly pretty unique. And it feels like Funhaus is speculating as if Valve has the same attitudes as any other developer (and that all developers are the same). When they say Valve just probably isn't interested in working on Half Life 3 right now, that makes since to me. Valve does pretty much whatever they want, and people accept it because regardless of the time it takes, the quality is top.

But I think it is a leap to say that because they aren't working on it right now, they just don't care at all about it. That Half Life isn't something they care about it and it was just some chore to them.

Are you serious? You totally misunderstood what they were saying about Half Life 2. They didn't say it was a flop. 11:40. They said everyone was saying "Half Life was amazing, now make something better because we expect more and it had better be the best game ever" (to paraphrase) and the fact that not only did Half Life 2 live up to those expectations but beat them is amazing and should be celebrated. 12:06 "I think it's not appropriately celebrated that that game wasn't a massive disappointment. The fact that it met expectations, I think, is incredible." They are saying the bar was set so unreasonably high after Half Life 1 that it was almost impossible to believe that Half Life 2 would meet fanboy expectations, and it did.

Consider the Hobbit, or SW Episode 1, or the Matrix sequels, or any number of properties where the companies can't live up to unreasonable expectations. Time and again expectations are set ridiculously high and then the actual product is released and people hate it. FunHaus is saying and has said for a long time that Half Life 2 met those unreasonable expectations, which demanded greatness, and this should be commended. Then Lawrence continues at 12:14 saying that Episodes 1 and 2 were also amazing.

They aren't shitting on Half Life 2 at all. They didn't say it was a flop. They were saying that fans keep raising the bar for their expectations, wanting the best game ever, which is hard to consistently reproduce time and again and Valve feels backed into a corner. Valve is unwilling to release a subpar product in Half Life 3 that will diminish from the series, and anything less than perfect will be criticized by fans because the fans have been putting Half Life on a pedestal for so long. So Valve is, and seems to have been consistently, downplaying Half Life because the demands of the fans are so rabid and it can't live up to expectations yet. Which is sort of the sentiment that Adam expresses at 11:14. If fans weren't so rabid for greatness from Valve, Valve wouldn't feel as pressured to come out with something that is pristine and perfect, which they feel they can't do. So Valve would then be able to put out a good, though perhaps not perfect, game because they aren't pressured into only producing something that's perfect.

Also, Sir Larr and James hit it on the head, at least in my opinion, FFVII would take some serious work to render in huge 3D environments that are interactive and explorable, and then there's the AI for any and all characters to move within that environment.

i totally agree with James and bruce when you said that you continue to pay for content you enjoy such as paying for psychonauts and Bruce with star wars even if it means owning it multiply times

you continue to support a company or a product because you enjoy it, and regardless of how well it does in sales or reviews for you it stuck with you so continue you to support it.
