Can't say I agree with Adam about just ignoring something if you don't like it. If you don't have people offering criticisms and negative opinions on a piece of art, then you just have an echo chamber of positivity. This is not good for the artists who create content as it just leads them to become blind to the faults of their work and not seek to improve themselves. Nor is it good for consumers as it will just cause them to be disappointed when they buy something everyone seems to love that turns out to be flawed. He seems to be under the impression that the only reason people post negative opinions about things online is to hurt the creator in some way, but to use his example of Battlefront, the people who bought that game and didn't enjoy it aren't necessarily trying to punish the creators, they may be trying to push them in a different direction for future games, or possibly trying to prevent others from spending their money and being disappointed like they were.

The paralell of paintings or other mediums of art and video games does not work very well. When a painter makes a piece of art, he is not /looking/ for criticism. Art in that form is not really concerned with what others think about it. You do not create art for others, you do it as an expression of yourself and, if you are very good at that, others like it. Video Games are not the same type of medium, so to compare them just does not work. Companies do not make video games for themselves, they make it for consumers. Their job is to create something that others will love because, if they dont, they don't make money. If you are making art just and only commercially, then yes the parallel works. Otherwise it doesn't.

If you refuse to separate the two then you have to also take into consideration that no consumer will be as harsh on an artists work as the artist himself is. Bethesda in particular listens to their customers very well, and it shows in the way their games have changed over time, have streamlined and gotten simpler while still staying just as fun. The problem there is you can never please /everyone/. Bethesda has a lot of fans, but some still gripe even after they include some things that mods have created, and that players have wanted, into their games.

Your optimistic view of negative reviews also doesn't hold up real well. Constructive criticism rarely ever takes the form of a negative review. A negative review, as on steam, is that persons way of trying to discourage you from buying that product. Which is why they use the term "Recommended" or "Not Recommended". You are posting a review there to either recommend that people pay money for that product, or tell them to stay away. It's those type of negative reviews, that tell people your opinion and, usually, loudly and angrily rant about a games shortcomings, that really serve no purpose. In that vein, if you do not like a game, you are very unlikely to give a developer criticism or suggestions in such a way that will help them along the road. More likely, you will just stop playing it. On the other hand, if you like a game but notice its shortcomings, you are likely to leave a review stating why others might not like it and giving some advice for improving it. Those are two very different types of reviews, and I believe they were talking about the first type.

GRAHHHHH! It took them way to long to figure out there was a door there. I know this isn't a gameplay video, and that they especially don't care about the game when they're doing a podcasts, I'm fine with that. But they just kept not seeing it for so long.

In relation to what Laurence was saying about poor quality discourse around games, it's probably because a large portion of the audience are immature kids.

You have no idea how long I have been waiting for fan art. But now you will. Since I saw the title. Then I wanted to see it. Then it took 4 minutes for my internet to buffer full 1080. So little over four minutes. Yay content.
