Just a thought, when I played D&D some time ago, the sleep spell effected  hit dice of a creature, not their hot points, so more should be falling asleep. Though I do admit has been a long time since I played the game, and the rules have changed a lot since then

i don't really know the rules of the game but sometimes i would like to know how much HP the enemies have because they are breaking knees and breaking bones. can anyone tell me if it's the DM that has the power not to say that ?

    • zbecker623 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

The DM withholds that info to make things more interesting and more realistic, it's the standard practice for D&D. If players know what enemies HP it makes it too easy to meta-game.

This is my opinion on this episode and the series in general.

Okay, gonna go off a bit here (strap in, it's a long one). I'll let everyone know my stance on this series before I get into the meat of the comment; this is without a doubt, my favorite series out of anything on the Let's Play network, this is what I'm waiting all week in anticipation for. That being said, I hold this under a microscope more than any other show in hopes they continue to improve it, so here we go.

Warning: some spoilers, please watch the episode before you read this.

Here it is! The great confrontation of the Moondog Brothers! This was the goal of their first main quest, what we've been waiting for 7 episodes for! But sadly, it had a very anti-climactic ending.

The main stylistic difference between Twits & Crits and Heroes & Halfwits is the amount of Roleplaying. Funhaus really found their characters' personalities early on and rolled with it; they've always had phenomenal antics and unique interactions between characters (the essentials for great roleplaying). Achievement Hunter and friends never really seemed to build their characters up very much to stand out (more just following the DM's story). However, what H&H lacks in roleplaying, it makes up for in combat with high quality, balanced fight scenes. And unfortunately that is Funhaus's Achilles heel. Going back to my intro, this is my FAVORITE series, and I've been ok with lackluster and mostly generic combat, because they always find a way to bring it back with the roleplaying and character interactions. But in the 2 hours of this video, there was next to none of that.

I found this fight poorly balanced. Like I said, this was basically the climax of their first plot quest, and the only one in any real peril was the throw-away character Sai Tei. As far as combat goes, there was nothing creative about it; every attack feels like more of the same, (chop at the neck, cut the head off, etc.) every character has their "go-to attack" rather than a fight with variety and circumstance. And my main issue with this, Dan not putting his foot down as DM. He let a lot of stuff go, probably because of the length of the fight and it dragging on, but that goes back to balancing. Some stuff just came out of turn (i.e. Elyse firing the crossbow on James's turn) and also some minor stuff with movement (not a huge deal, but I feel it's good to set standards for smoother gameplay).

Matt seemed kind of out of it this episode, and I felt Bruce and Lawrence weren't bringing the same high energy as they were in the last few episodes (which is fair, they set a high bar for themselves).

I know I'm coming off as critical (zing!) and I'll probably get a shit ton of downvotes from fans who want to love every bit of content, and won't accept anything negative (I'd be more than happy to hear the community's opinions on my opinions, but I'd like to keep it civil). But at the end of the day, this was still a Funhaus video, and I still laughed, and I still enjoyed it, but it didn't live up to the lofty expectations I set for it. And I'm trying to rip this thing apart to the best of my ability (Spent as much time writing this as I spent watching the video) but I'm doing it in the hope that someone from Funhaus sees this and they have one more frame of reference for things to improve on for season 2!

I will say however, this fight is now behind us. And next episode we'll get some more out of combat situations (where they really shine). Then the season finale! Really hoping there isn't a terribly long break between seasons. And really hope they keep improving and keep the good times rolling!

I disagree completely. It seems like the problem you have is that you consider their combat generic ("every attack feels like more of the same, (chop at the neck, cut the head off, etc.) every character has their "go-to attack" rather than a fight with variety and circumstance"), and unbalanced. I think their combat is perfect, it's in-tune with their characters and is really just an extension of their roleplaying.

As for Dan's loose DMing, ("And my main issue with this, Dan not putting his foot down as DM. He let a lot of stuff go [...]"), I really prefer it. Having played DnD and Pathfinder with hard-ass DMs who were very by-the-book and essentially looked for any reason to butt-heads with the players really limits the creativity, roleplaying aspect, and even how entertaining the game turns out. An example of this, as you mentioned, is Elyse's out of turn crossbow shot, which, yes was technically not allowed, but then again, added some flair and awesomeness to the fight (which goes against what you were saying about the fight being generic). The DM should only step in if he thinks its a major violation or could potentially affect the game too much.

Just the kind of comment I was hoping for! And I'm thankful you were as respectful as you were! I understand where you're coming from when you say each character's attacks were an extension of their RPing, but I feel that you're only half right. Let me give you an example.

Adam has become a bloodthirsty psychopath, and now he has a thing where he kills people in a gruesome manner. Now, every fight I EXPECT Adam to rip a part out of one of his enemies and wear it. While it is unique, and it was shocking the first time, I now know what to expect at the end of every fight, and that takes some of the spontaneity out of the game. They can't linger on one character/ combat trait, and they need to diversify to keep things fresh.

And I agree that the bit with Elyse's flying crossbow attack was the most unique and interesting bit of combat in this episode, there could have been a way to work that out with the DM to keep things fair and balanced (take her action away next turn or use an inspiration dice, anything as long as they didn't disregard the fact she got a free action move). But when I say the fight felt generic, I mean they didn't use as much imagination as they could because they simply didn't need to. I have somewhat of a history with D&D (I've played under half a dozen DMs with different styles) and I feel the best and most true D&D experience (and the most rewarding one) is when you are limited and find a way to make something out of nothing. If they walked into this fight and just did standard attacks for every attack, they'd still have won without a doubt. While they explained how they did their attacks in a creative way, that doesn't make the attack itself creative.

While Dan needs to make a welcoming and lax environment for them to start out, I felt like the win was practically handed to them because they had so few limitations, i.e. their perfect coordination across hundreds of feet; when a better thing would be to suggest to them a way to solve the communication issue, rather than disregard it and letting them go with metagaming.

It's a stark contrast to my style of play, I basically do everything through my character's eyes. I don't have any idea what's going on across the battlefield or even behind me for that matter. I also typically leave enemy HP to the DM and make my move based off the descriptions of the enemies rather than getting bogged down with meta battle strategy (unless that were part of my character). But that being said, no 2 D&D experiences are alike, and everybody likes different things and has different styles. And sometimes the easy-fit, do your own thing, flexible style is good. But in my opinion, if I'm going to watch another group play, I'd like the stakes to be a little higher so that there is real tension to the video.

Like I said in my comment, I'm giving a very strict review of this to let them know there is room to grow and improve as Role Players. I understand some of them are still new to this, and it definitely takes some time to adjust.

But I thank you for your opinion, and giving me a point of discussion!

While I disagree with you and side with GU4D7OR1, I think you made an excellent point that this adventure has given us an awesome initial story and will hopefully provide a great base to improve upon in a more comprehensive second season.  I feel like a lot of your gripes with this season are based on the fact that this is something they aren't super experienced with, and it shows.  The fights are most definitely one sided, but I feel like that keeps them from going at each other's throats whilst excessively arguing about who didn't save who.  That is something you don't want to see, believe me.  (Remember those Overwatch videos?)  Everybody seemed a little less energetic this episode, perhaps it was an off day for them; it happens.  But, I can't wait for the next episode and I know the action will only improve in the second season.  So, I look forward to that!  Have a beer and relax Enigmatic_Eagle, it only gets better from here.

@ParadigmVictus Yes! That was basically the moral of the comment. I know Elyse and Lawrence have some experience with D&D, but even if you have 1 new player in the group, it shifts the playstyle of the game. If more than half of the players are new, it's basically a fresh start for everyone. And you can tell they are picking things up bit by bit in each episode (Funhaus is a smart group of people so they learn things quicker than a lot of groups). But you could tell that they had a pretty good understanding of how roleplaying works after about 6 hours (took me about 10-15 hours in my first game to get the concept that my character wasn't me). I think that by the start of season 2 the ball will really be rolling and they'll be much more adept! Sure wish I were old enough to have a beer...

Check out Roll20. It's an online D&D that's actually pretty awesome.

If you wanna play with real people though, most game shops run a D&D night where you can start a campaign with random people. Here in Australia, most Good Games shops do it at least once a week, I'm sure there'd be something similar in most countries.
