    • Monster Hunter World Versus Destiny 2

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

Up until recently, I was an avid Destiny fanboy that used to obsess about my weaponry, light levels, and the series lore in general. But Destiny 2 turned out to be something that I just didn't find that much enjoyment in, especially when it came to the series's end-game and grinding. Lately, I've been seeing a whole lot of discussion online about how Monster Hunter World is a pretty good destination for the burned Destiny guardian...

Eurogamer: Monster Hunter World has so much to teach other big budget games

Kotaku: Monster Hunter: World Shows How Destiny 2's Grind Could Improve

GamesRadar: Why do so many Destiny players seem to love Monster Hunter World all of a sudden?

I've actually never played a Monster Hunter game before, so all of this is definitely intriguing to me. I know a lot of people who are playing (and deeply love) the newest entry, so I've definitely been a little curious to try it out myself. It's particularly interesting to see how this Japanese game has come over and found a huge audience in the West by outdoing the very thing that Western games have been trying to achieve for the last couple of years now.

I imagine a lot of that has to do with Capcom having years to experiment with multiple titles, whereas many of these big AAA live service games are having to do all of their growing up while thousands of players rage at them. And it also probably has a good bit to do with the fact that Monster Hunter in general has never been designed around the grind in order to increase "player engagement" -- rather, it's all just there in the base game for you to enjoy and have fun, without worries about recurring spending and all the other metrics that Western publishers are typically trying to observe.

Anyway, all that to say -- do any of you Monster Hunters out there have some things to add for me? Would I enjoy this game if I loved Destiny?

    • A New Alien Shooter Is in the Works

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

It looks like Fox wants to ramp up its video games -- and as such, their game division, called FoxNext, has just announced the acquisition of a studio of industry veterans to work on a game set in the Alien universe.

Development on this new game will be headed up by Cold Iron Studios -- with talent from games like Metroid Prime 3, Borderlands, Doom and Bioshock Infinite -- and according to the announcement, it’s going to be a PC and console shooter that explores parts of the Alien universe we haven’t seen yet.

FoxNext studio head Aaron Loeb added a couple more details about the title and Cold Iron Studios, saying: “all of us at FoxNext Games are thrilled to be working with them as they create an action-packed persistent world, steeped in the mysteries of this beloved Alien universe.”

Given the recent success of Alien: Isolation, it was only a matter of time before someone went back to the Xenomorph well -- but let’s hope it’s more like that outing, and less like Colonial: Marines.

    • Final Fantasy XV PC Release Date Announced

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

So we've finally got the release date for Final Fantasy XV on PC -- and you'll be able to go on adventures with Noctis and his beautiful anime bros in the Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition on March 6. In conjunction with the release date, Square also dropped a trailer for the game, complete with tons of cool tidbits about how much better it's going to look for the master race. When director Hajime Tabata talked about the PC port last year, he mentioned all kinds of fun additions like user-made quests and other content, so it'll be interesting to see what the community eventually does with the game.

Square ALSO dropped mention of the new Royal Edition of Final Fantasy XV, which features an all new dungeon, all the previous DLC pass content, and more.

      Here's the PC version trailer:

    • So People Really Love Doki Doki Literature Club

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

At the end of the year, it's not uncommon to hear about random games that might have passed under your radar before -- and this year, that game seems to be Doki Doki Literature Club for me. I've been hearing its name tossed around on random "year end" lists, and seeing it crop up on Twitter here and there as well... and then to top it all off, it just took home 4 separate awards in IGN's People's Choice Awards.

According to the game's developer, Dan Salvato, Doki Doki Literature Club was just voted by IGN readers as Best PC Game, Best Adventure Game, Best Story, and Most Innovative. Which is pretty dang impressive. My cursory knowledge of the game is just that it's a Visual Novel slash dating simulator slash psychological horror game -- a prospect that is super intriguing and terrifying.

But either way, I think I have a new game to play over the holidays. Anybody else jumped into Doki Doki Literature Club?

    • Mega Man Composer Releases New Album

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

If you're looking for some good video game-ish tunes to add to your collection, Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae has just posted a new personal album to Bandcamp. Titled "Three Movements," the album covers several eras of music, moving from classic chiptunes style music to a more orchestral score -- all while keeping that video game feel.

It's really a great listen, and I love the concept of it from top to bottom, especially when it circles back around to retro. It's especially nice because Matsumae is totally still channeling Mega Man through many of the tracks. Say what you will about the quality of that series over time, you always know when you're strapping in that you're going to get an excellent score.

The album is just $10, or you can stream it for free on Bandcamp to your heart's content.

    • Nintendo Switch and Xbox One X Top Google Searches

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

2017 was definitely a big year for the video game industry -- not only because of all the great games we've gotten to play, but also because of the release of two brand new consoles thanks to the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One X. If there was any question as to whether or not these systems actually made a splash, look no further than Google!

The company released their annual search report this week, detailing some of the most searched-for terms on the entire internet. And it seems that both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One X were in the top 5 search terms for consumer technology -- at number 3 and 5, respectively. That's fairly impressive in a category that is normally eaten up by smartphones (and for reference, the other 3 items were the iPhone 8, the iPhone X, and the Samsung Galaxy S8).

Considering what we know about the Switch, all that consumer interest has definitely translated into loads of sales. We're still waiting on Microsoft to release some totals for Xbox One X -- but this is another pretty good indication that consumers have been very much interested.

    • How Many People Watched The Game Awards

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

Some of the early numbers are in for last week's Game Awards -- and it looks like this was a record year for the show. According to the organizers, 11.5 million tuned in to check out the ceremony this year, which is way, way up from 2016's event. That show brought in just 3.8 million in comparison, which makes this a 202% jump. As for some other stats released about the awards, it seems more than 70% of the viewers on Twitch interacted by voting, and Steam viewers clocked in at around 70 minutes of watch time each.

So hey, great job on getting watched by lots of people this year, Game Awards. We look forward to the trailers, announcements, Death Stranding trailers, and memes waiting for us in 2018.

    • Kojima Dishes Out Tons of Death Stranding Info

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

After multiple super confusing trailers, it looks like Kojima is dishing more on his mysterious game, Death Stranding. In a new interview with IGN, Kojima reveals tons of cool lore and gameplay details... like the fact that the underwater sequence seen in the most recent trailer is actually the game over screen?

Yeah, apparently so. Kojima says when you die, death isn't the end. Rather, you hang out in that purgatory type space and can collect items or go back to your body, during a countdown timer. Once you go back, the game doesn't reset you to before the point you died -- you pick back up in the game world. He also commented on the rain that seems to age people -- it's apparently called Timefall and it's super important to the story and lore. And if you're wondering where this new trailer falls in with the actual game, Kojima revealed that it's pretty close to the game's prologue, and happens fairly early on.

So yeah... maybe that'll make Death Stranding make some more sense for you. Or not. There's actually plenty more to read about in the IGN interview, and I highly recommend giving it a read -- it also goes into Kojima's love for fan theories, and some of the struggles they went through because of the recent voice actor's strike.

    • Far Cry 5 Delayed

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

Looks like you'll have to wait a tiiiiiny bit longer to play Far Cry 5. Ubisoft announced today that the game will be delayed. Don't worry, though -- that delay won't be too terribly long, as the game is moving from February 27, 2018 to March 27, 2018.

According to Ubisoft: "the extra time will allow the team at Ubisoft Montreal to make some additional improvements that will bring the best, most ambitious Far Cry experience in line with the team’s original vision. We’re excited for fans to join the Resistance in Hope County, Montana against the Project at Eden’s Gate cult."

While it's no doubt disappointing for fans that the game will be out a tad later, it's probably also a tad disappointing for Ubisoft. Not only for the obvious reasons, but because this likely puts them that much closer to the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2. Previously, they'd said they were happy that Red Dead Redemption 2 being pushed out of 2018 was great for them and gave their games more space to breathe.

    • Lots of PlayStation Stuff Discounted for Holidays

Eddy Writer - The Know, Nomad

Forget Black Friday and Cyber Monday, now looks like the time to save big on PlayStation hardware. Sony just announced that they'll be doing some special discounts from December 10 through December 16 on PS4 Pro and PSVR.

The PS4 Pro is getting $50 knocked off, making it $350 instead of $400, with bundles dropping from $450 down to $400. Meanwhile, the PSVR is getting mega cheap -- the Gran Turismo Sport bundle will now be just $200 (down from $300), while the Doom VFR and Skyrim bundles will similarly get $100 discounts, down to $300 and $350 respectively.

Considering PlayStation already had record-breaking sales for the console's history over the Black Friday shopping weekend, it'll be interesting to see if the system keeps moving units just as quickly throughout the holidays.
